Chapter 9: Defense Against the Dark Arts

The next morning, on the second floor of the magic high tower, in the Black Magic Defense Class classroom.

“Good morning, apprentices.”

“Good morning, Professor Eva.”

Every Monday morning from 8 AM to 11 AM is a fixed course for all first-year apprentices—Black Magic Defense Class, which is Wizard Combat Class. The lecturer is Professor Grace-Eva, a Formal Wizard from White Coral Academy, a First-Level Wizard code-named Scarlet Witch.

Grace-Eva is the Firstborn daughter of the Turin Wizard family—the Eva Family, and also a genius Wizard who broke through to First-Level Wizard before the age of twenty-five.

She majored in blood magic, cultivated in Black Bone Forest during her apprentice period, and later transferred to White Coral Academy. During her third-level apprentice period, she was recommended by White Coral Academy to the Second-Level Wizard Gathering Place, the Dordogne-White Tower, for further study, was promoted to Blood Wizard, and was granted the Wizard code name—Scarlet Witch—by the White Tower.

The former star Wizard, after completing her studies at the White Tower, unexpectedly retreated, not pursuing further advancement, but instead chose to return to White Coral Academy to serve as a Professor.

...

“Meditation is the process by which Wizards use mental power to leverage magic power, establishing a soul circuit between the Wizard Tree within the soul and the Wizard World ecosystem.”

“If the soul circuit is unstable, then even if your mental power is high enough and your magic power is strong enough, the independent ecological network of the Wizard Tree will struggle to support your promotion to Formal Wizard. In the end, you will inevitably face the outcome of magic power riot and soul collapse…”

“Therefore, in addition to endless meditation and study, combat is also an effective way for the Wizard's own ecosystem to quickly adapt to the world's magic power…”

“High magic power does not mean you can fight. Skilled combat techniques and combat thinking can better utilize the Witchcraft you have learned…”

“This world is very dangerous, and if you are not careful, you will lose your life…”

The sound of scribbling notes was incessant in the apprentice classroom. At this moment, looking at the combat podium, Jia Na's attention was particularly focused on the tall figure dressed in a Blood Red robe the same color as her ear-length short hair, with an exceptionally pale but well-defined, slightly masculine, and serious face.

“Today, we will still randomly select a few apprentices for one-on-one Wizard combat. There are no restrictions on Witchcraft moves, but no items may be used… The winner will be rewarded with an opportunity to ask a question after class.”

Hearing Grace's words, Jia Na's originally focused and calm expression suddenly changed, her eyes filled with eagerness. Just as Jia Na was about to raise her hand to volunteer, a task reminder sound suddenly rang in her mind.

【Today's Task: Complete a Wizard combat challenge and achieve victory;

Task Reward: 200 points of Talent Experience, 800 points of Skill Experience, one random reward;】

Hearing the task prompt, Jia Na quickly opened the task panel in her mind. As expected, unlike the 'white' font of the previous task description, the font color of this task description was 'green'.

“It's actually a green task. It seems the difficulty of the task judgment this time is a bit higher than the last.”

After exploring for the past six months, Jia Na also gradually figured out some of the rules and patterns of the “Daily Task System”.

Tasks with white font are low-level tasks, while green indicates a slightly more difficult upgrade task. Since Jia Na's rebirth, most of the tasks she has encountered are white low-level tasks. Although green tasks are not particularly rare, their frequency is definitely not as high as white tasks.

The most significant difference between these two types of tasks, besides the different Talent Experience points and Skill Experience points, is the value of the random task rewards.

Taking the character stats on the task panel as an example, white tasks only reward 【+0.1-0.2 points】, while green tasks reward around 【+0.3-0.5 points】, and sometimes there are unexpected special character talents.

For example, the Exceptional Memory, Muscle Control, and Fair and Tender Skin that Jia Na currently possesses are special character talents she has gained over the past six months.

Except for the third talent, which only slightly improves skin quality, Exceptional Memory and Muscle Control have brought very convenient benefits to Jia Na.

Just like during her first year as an apprentice, Jia Na was able to study the six compulsory basic courses while also taking Mithris Language and Basic Contract Studies, thanks to the Exceptional Memory talent rewarded by the system.

And Muscle Control not only allows Jia Na to perform each casting gesture more precisely, but also in social situations, when facing people she particularly dislikes but cannot offend, the Muscle Control talent allows Jia Na to easily control her facial muscles and produce the most appropriate yet undetectable “social fake smile”.

“After completing the task, in addition to the system reward, I can also get a chance to ask Professor Grace a question… Overall, it's a great deal.”

Even for free apprentice courses, asking questions to the teaching Professor requires strict adherence to the Wizard's “equivalent exchange principle” using academic credits for exchange.

Especially for a powerful Wizard with a reputation like “Scarlet Witch” Grace, the opportunity for a free question is even more precious.

“Does anyone want to volunteer for combat?”

“Professor, I would like to apply to participate.”

As soon as Grace finished speaking, Jia Na, who was sitting in the front row of the classroom, as well as apprentices in the back rows, quickly raised their hands. Seeing this, more than a dozen Wizard Apprentices also raised their hands one after another.

“Not bad, you are much more proactive this time than in class last week.”

There are about a hundred first-year apprentices in the classroom, half of whom still have their mental power stuck at 9 points, not even crossing the threshold of a First-Level Apprentice.

Among the remaining half of the apprentices, although they have already been promoted to First-Level Wizard Apprentice, a small portion still only master Witchcraft limited to cantrips like Cleaning Spell and Floating Spell.

Apprentices of this strength level going onto the stage are simply inviting humiliation. Even the simplest First-Level Witchcraft Acid Spray can pose a huge threat to them, let alone achieving victory in a battle.

Among the remaining thirty or so people, seventy percent are Wizard Apprentices from Wizard families. They not only have sufficient cultivation resources but also received systematic Wizard combat training from a young age, and their combat strength is not to be underestimated.

The remaining thirty percent are commoner apprentices not from Wizard families. They have no power, no influence, and no wealth, but fortunately, they have good talent and were among the first batch to be promoted to First-Level Wizard Apprentice.

Among the apprentices who raised their hands this time, some are “commoner apprentices” like Jia Na who are short on money. After all, the opportunity to ask a Wizard of Grace's level a question is truly “very expensive”. Even if they don't use it themselves, they can exchange it for equivalent value with higher-grade Wizard Apprentices, so they won't lose out in any way.

Of course, there are also a few who simply love combat and enjoy the sense of accomplishment from defeating their opponents…
