Chapter 8: night

So, in her belly, is it really…

It had been some time since the apocalypse arrived. Signals were cut off, and order collapsed. This luxurious villa became an isolated island.

The reason the servants in the villa still maintained a superficial respect and obeyed her commands was not only because of the original owner’s past prestige, but also because they were all waiting.

Waiting for her father, who was rumored to be immensely powerful and influential, to come to their rescue.

The original owner had also been waiting.

After all, he was a legendary figure who could make the entire base tremble with a mere stomp of his foot.

What a pity.

In the book's ending, she never waited for her so-called father; the original owner was swiftly dealt with by the male lead at the very beginning.

“Knock, knock.”

A knock sounded, accompanied by Zhang Ma’s respectful voice: “Miss, the food is ready.”

Su Wan released the curtain, adjusted her breathing, walked to the door, and unlocked it.

Zhang Ma stood at the doorway, holding a tray. On the tray were a bottle of water, an egg, milk, and clear porridge. It was slightly more plentiful than what she had taken down earlier.

“Miss, do you want me to send it down now?” Zhang Ma lowered her head, but her gaze subtly swept over the athletic wear Su Wan had changed into. What was wrong with Miss? Her dressing style had completely changed.

“Give it to me.” Su Wan reached out and took the tray, her tone as flat as possible, “I’ll go myself.”

Zhang Ma’s movements paused, and she looked up, a hint of hesitation on her face: “Miss, the basement… shouldn’t we let the people downstairs deliver it? You…”

“No need.” Su Wan interrupted her, her voice a few shades colder, carrying an undeniable tone of command, “I’ll go myself.”

She needed to personally confirm Lu Shiyan’s condition, and she also needed to… continue playing this act well.

A complex emotion flickered in Zhang Ma’s eyes, but she ultimately lowered her gaze: “Yes, Miss.”

Su Wan held the tray and turned to walk towards the stairs. Her high heels had been replaced with sneakers, and her footsteps descending the stairs were much lighter. The closer she got to the basement, the more intense the scent of blood and despair became.

Inside, it was dead silent.

She pushed the door open.

Light flooded in again, illuminating a corner of the cell.

Lu Shiyan was still in his previous posture, leaning against the wall, bound by iron chains. He had his eyes closed, the scars on his face appearing even more gruesome and terrifying in the light. His chest rose and fell slightly, and his breathing seemed a bit steadier than before.

The water bottle on the ground was still overturned, and the spilled water had already seeped into the dirty floor.

He hadn’t touched the water and bread she had left earlier.

Su Wan’s heart sank.

She carefully walked in, holding the tray, and placed it in the same spot as before, neither too close nor too far from Lu Shiyan.

“The food… I brought it for you.” Her voice was still a bit tight, “And water.”

Lu Shiyan didn’t open his eyes or react in any way, like a lifeless statue.

Su Wan stood still, watching him.

He seemed to… be asleep? Or was he just resting with his eyes closed?

His eyelashes were long, casting faint shadows on his pale lower eyelids. If not for the numerous scars on his body and the sinister aura emanating from him, this would have been an extremely handsome face.

Su Wan dared not get too close.

She just stood quietly, observing his reaction.

Time passed by minute by minute.

In the cell, there was only her own nervous heartbeat and Lu Shiyan’s almost imperceptible breathing.

He remained motionless.

Su Wan hesitated.

Should she say something?

For example, emphasize that “child” again?

No, that wouldn’t work. The more she said, the more mistakes she would make.

Over-emphasis would only make her seem guilty.

What she needed to do now was to let him see her “attitude.”

A contradictory attitude of… both fearing him and having no choice but to “take care” of him.

“You… eat something first.” Su Wan said again, her voice very soft, “Regain some strength.”

After saying that, she didn’t linger, slowly, step by step, backing out of the cell.

The moment she turned and closed the door, Lu Shiyan, who had kept his eyes tightly shut, slowly opened them.

In those dark eyes, there was no hint of sleepiness, only a cold, unfathomable abyss.

His gaze fell on the disappearing figure at the doorway, then slowly shifted to the food and water on the tray not far away.

Clear porridge, eggs, and also chicken soup and milk.

His Adam’s apple subtly bobbed. Hunger, like a flame, scorched his stomach. His body, weakened and tormented for a long time, emitted a strong craving.

But he didn’t move.

His gaze once again turned to the tightly closed door, his eyes swirling with thick hatred and… a subtle, complex emotion that even he was unwilling to admit.

Pregnant?

That woman…

Lu Shiyan tugged at the corner of his mouth, revealing a cold and sarcastic smile.

How could he believe such an absurd lie?

It must be a new trick.

To lure him with food? Or to try and sway him with that illusory “child”?

Ridiculous.

He closed his eyes, forcefully shaking off the image of that pale-faced figure in a white dress, with fear and determination in her eyes, from his mind.

He just needed to wait.

Wait for that increasingly clear and uncontrollable power within his body to completely erupt.

By then, these chains, this cell, and that woman…

He would personally crush all of it, along with all the humiliation he had endured!

It was dinner time. Zhang Ma delivered dinner to her room door, still with that respectful yet probing look.

“Miss, your dinner.”

“Just leave it by the door.” Su Wan replied from behind the door, not opening it.

It was quiet outside for a moment, then came the soft thud of the tray being placed on the floor, and Zhang Ma’s footsteps receding.

A thick-cut steak, estimated to be at least medium-well, with seemingly excellent meat quality. Beside it was a bowl of vegetable salad, with glistening dressing on the green leaves. There was also a small plate of cut fruit, quite varied and brightly colored.

In the apocalypse, the outside might already be a living hell.

Energy! Physical strength! These were the fundamentals of survival!

She picked up her knife and fork, cutting off a large piece of steak without hesitation.

Only by filling her stomach would she have the strength to survive!

Outside the window, the sky had completely darkened, and the thick night was like a huge curtain, enveloping the entire world.

On an apocalyptic night, without the city’s dazzling lights, there was only a deathly silence, occasionally punctuated by the roars of unknown creatures, adding to the terror.

The villa was also unusually quiet; the servants were asleep.

Su Wan got up and checked the doors and windows.
