“Ah!”
Miss Bai cried out, suddenly threw back the covers, and sat up from the bed.
It was still the familiar ceiling; to the left front corner of the bed was a neatly arranged desk, and on the wall beside it was a bookshelf filled with various textbooks and exercise books. A window faced the desk, its curtains tightly drawn, doing their best to block the midday sun.
On the other side of the desk was a storage cabinet, on which were placed several cute, somewhat aged dolls and a completed Lego house.
Opposite the desk, on the wall on the other side of the bed, was a brown wooden door, and beside the door was a wooden wardrobe, split open on the top half and with four drawers on the bottom half.
This was her room, undeniably.
Squinting her still sleepy eyes, looking at the silver-white hair hanging down from her shoulders, Miss Bai raised her hands high and stretched.
Feeling the slight coolness from the air conditioner, Miss Bai shivered, then flopped back down, wrapping herself tightly in the quilt.
As a third-year high school student preparing for the college entrance exam, she rarely slept so late.
But yesterday, she had just experienced a huge turning point in her life, and everything that happened truly shocked her.
Her name is Miss Bai. Before yesterday, she was just an ordinary third-year high school student preparing for the college entrance exam, and also a girl addicted to the internet.
Her skill level, however, was questionable; not to mention action-shooter games that required operation, even with simple simulation management games, she had to reload several times—the kind who was bad but loved to play.
Yesterday was a rare holiday, coinciding with her 18th birthday. She had thought it would just be a simple birthday at home with a cake, but everything that happened yesterday made her feel like she was living in a dream.
Yesterday, as soon as she left school, she was cornered in the car by her parents. Both of them looked serious, saying they had something to confess to her.
At that moment, she felt completely off, her mind frantically replaying plots from various novels and TV shows.
Did Mom and Dad get divorced? Am I going to be separated?
Or am I not their biological child? Just an adopted daughter?
Or did Dad get into trouble with his business? Are they going bankrupt?
...
But in the end, the reality did unfold like a novel, but not as she had imagined; instead, it directly veered into the direction of a brainless wish-fulfillment story.
Her family was actually extremely wealthy, owning several companies with a market value of hundreds of billions!
Her parents had always pretended to be an ordinary family with her for the sake of family tradition, to let the heir experience the hardships of common folk, so as not to forget their roots!
And she was the sole descendant of the Bai family in this generation!
That short conversation directly burned out Miss Bai’s CPU.
It wasn't until a birthday banquet, attended by numerous company executives, business partners, and government officials, that Miss Bai finally accepted this fact under the blessings of many strangers.
After returning home, she felt as if she was in a dream, her mind swirling with thoughts, rolling around in bed for a long time before finally falling asleep.
Snapping out of her memories, Miss Bai grabbed the phone by the bed and skillfully unlocked the screen.
A message had already popped up, sent by her father:
“Xiao Yi, the driver is already waiting downstairs. You can come over directly whenever you wake up. Mom and Dad are waiting for you at the new house.”
“You don’t need to pack anything; someone will move everything over later.”
It was also accompanied by a picture of a gray five-seater sedan that Miss Bai didn’t recognize.
Her gaze left the phone and fell on the clothes rack by the door, where an expensive dress she had worn yesterday, which had been in her shopping cart for a year, was still hanging.
It seemed everything yesterday wasn't a dream after all.
Rubbing her slightly squinted eyes, she brushed away the white strands of hair clinging to her face, then lightly patted her cheeks, rubbing them together, feeling the softness in her hands.
“So soft!”
After a moment of narcissistic self-indulgence, Miss Bai moved herself to the edge of the bed, extended her fair legs, picked up a pair of panda-head slippers from under the bed, and slipped them onto her feet.
Shuffling her feet, she walked to the desk and pulled open the curtains. The bright midday light streamed into the room, causing Miss Bai to instinctively squint her eyes.
After her eyes adjusted to the brightness, Miss Bai leaned on the desk, bending down to peer out the window. Indeed, a gray car was parked downstairs from the rental apartment, exactly like the photo her father had sent.
“I always dreamed of living a leisurely, slacking-off life; I never thought it would actually come true!”
Thinking about her future easygoing and carefree life, Miss Bai’s mood unconsciously brightened. With her messy pajamas and disheveled hair, she hopped into the bathroom.
The inside of the bathroom wasn't large. To the right upon entering was a low sink, at just the right height for Miss Bai to use.
On the wall to the left of the sink was an additional full-length mirror. On the wall opposite the mirror, at a height of about 1.8 meters, was a shelf, with hooks below it holding three towels: red, green, and blue.
Her reflection in the mirror at that moment showed her:
Wearing a loose brown and white spotted pajama top, its hem reaching her thighs, with no pajama bottoms in sight, revealing her slender, pale, long legs.
Her waist-length white hair was somewhat messy, her face slightly youthful, and her height equally youthful; of course, her figure was also youthful...
Her height of less than 1.6 meters, coupled with this appearance, made her look like a little girl who had just entered junior high school when out in public.
Looking at herself in the mirror, Miss Bai cupped her hands over her chest and sighed softly.
“Sigh, why didn't I inherit Mom's figure? Did a gene mutation change that too?”
Miss Bai’s white hair was natural, just like her sapphire blue eyes. It was said to be caused by a gene mutation.
When she was young, she had suffered a lot of discrimination and exclusion because of this, even beginning to doubt if she was truly her parents' child, until her father later produced a paternity test, which dispelled her doubts.
Shaking her head, making her hair float, and shaking off the jumbled thoughts in her mind, Miss Bai grabbed her cup and toothbrush and began to get ready.
After a full half an hour, Miss Bai, standing in front of the rental apartment door, had returned to her usual appearance:
A standard blue and white sailor uniform, paired with a matching knee-length pleated skirt. Her hair was neatly combed and draped down her back, and she wore a dark blue wide-brimmed sun hat.
She turned back and gazed deeply at the rental apartment where she had lived since childhood, various emotions churning in Miss Bai's heart.
“If nothing happens in the future, I probably won’t come back here.”
Looking at her once warm and familiar small home, Miss Bai was filled with emotion for a moment.
Turning, she walked down the stairs. The driver had been waiting for a long time. Seeing Miss Bai appear, he immediately got out of the car and opened the rear passenger door for her.
“Miss Bai, please come in.”
The driver’s voice echoed in her ears, and the rich, slightly uncomfortable fragrance emanating from inside the car—everything felt so real.
“All of this is real…”
The driver was stunned to hear Miss Bai muttering to herself, then immediately plastered a smile back on his face:
“Of course it’s real, Miss.”
Miss Bai closed her eyes and took a deep breath of the strong perfume scent that had initially made her feel a little nauseous.
“This is so good. Even if the world were to end now, I’d be satisfied…”
Boom!
A violent hum suddenly swept over, startling Miss Bai to open her eyes abruptly.
But she only squinted open a slit, saw the sky full of crimson and the disintegrating world, and then her eyeballs rolled.
Finally, she only left a short syllable before completely losing consciousness:
“F*ck!”
