Chapter 6 The First Day
"What time is it now..." Paul asked weakly, lying on the ground.
"It's almost eight o'clock..." Kemmerich raised his hand tremblingly and looked at the time.
"Eight o'clock! Damn, we've been standing there for almost five hours! That damn dwarf!" Kropp cursed.
"Wait a minute, the cafeteria seems to be closed at 8 o'clock!" Lu Mingfei didn't care about anything else, his mind was full of food. When he heard it was almost 8 o'clock, he suddenly remembered that the cafeteria started serving food at 6 o'clock and would close at 8 o'clock.
"Fuck!!!" Lu Mingfei desperately got up and stumbled towards the cafeteria. The others were stunned when they heard Lu Mingfei's words, and regardless of their physical fatigue and pain, they ran towards the cafeteria.
Lu Mingfei fell down while running, and his whole body was covered with mud, but he didn't care. His mind was now full of food.
He tried several times to get up from the ground because his legs were too weak and felt as heavy as if they were filled with lead. He began to crawl towards the cafeteria with his hands.
If someone came to the training ground at this time, they would see a strange sight.
A large group of people staggered in one direction like zombies seeing living people. Some people fell down and were unable to get up, so they just crawled in that direction on all fours.
Finally, Lu Mingfei, covered in mud, and a large group of people behind him rushed into the cafeteria like evil ghosts. It is not wrong to say that they looked like ghosts, but it is more appropriate to say that they were a group of hungry ghosts.
"Food! Give us food quickly!" Their voices were dry and hoarse.
The cooks in the cafeteria were frightened by this group of hungry ghosts with hideous faces and covered in mud, and hurriedly put down the pots that were about to be sent to the kitchen for cleaning.
"You came too late. This is all we have now." The cook opened the pot and found only half a pot of cold pea soup.
The cook gave each of Lu Mingfei and his friends a piece of black bread and a small bowl of cold pea soup. Lu Mingfei and his friends took the food to the corner of the cafeteria and ate it greedily.
The taste of black bread was not good, with a sour taste. It was the first time that Lu Mingfei had eaten such bad bread. The bread was very rough and even had uncrushed bran in it, but it was good to have it to eat now.
Lu Mingfei began to chew the black bread, which was almost as hard as a rock, along with the pea soup. His cheeks were a little sore from chewing.
"I want to eat steamed buns..." Lu Mingfei began to miss the breakfast shop downstairs from his uncle and aunt's house.
For a period of time, in order to save money for Internet access at night, he only ate the cheapest white steamed buns in that breakfast shop every morning. He ate this for more than a month in a row, so much so that he began to feel nauseous when he saw steamed buns. Later, he never ate steamed buns again.
"What's a steamed bun?" asked Kemmerich, who was sitting next to him. Kemmerich was chewing black bread, his cheeks puffed up, and his cute baby face looked like a hamster.
"Mantou... Mantou is a traditional delicacy of an oriental country. It is a bit like the bread we eat now, but it is white and very delicate and soft. It is made of fine wheat flour and is fragrant, sweet and soft."
Lu Mingfei organized his words and introduced himself to Kemmerich, his saliva almost dripping out as he introduced.
"It must be delicious." Kemmerich's eyes lit up and his mouth watered when he heard Lu Mingfei's description. He wiped his saliva quickly and chewed two more bites of black noodles.
"Yes, it's delicious..." Lu Mingfei looked at the black bread in his hand and felt like crying. At this time, Himmelstoss passed by them with a plate, proudly raised his head, and like a rooster in heat. On his plate was a piece of white bread, an apple, and a bowl of steaming broth.
"This damn dwarf!" Paul cursed in a low voice and almost threw the black bread in his hand, which was as hard as a rock, directly over, but was stopped by Lu Mingfei.
"Paul, eat quickly. If you don't eat now, you don't know when you will have something to eat tomorrow." Lu Mingfei advised in a low voice. He knew Paul was angry, but now was not the time to vent.
"Hmph!" Paul withdrew his hand angrily, then took a big bite of the black bread, as if he was tearing Himmelstoss's flesh.
After eating, they dragged their tired bodies to the bathhouse, took off their muddy clothes, and then rushed into the bathhouse, crowding around it.
"Hiss~" When the warm water splashed on Lu Mingfei's arm, he felt a sharp pain and couldn't help but hiss. He looked at his arm, which had several purple marks on it.
This was the first time he was beaten so badly. Although he was bullied at his uncle and aunt's house, he was just pointed at and scolded, or at most had his ears pulled.
Today he experienced too many firsts in his life.
The naked bodies in the bathhouse also had some scars to a greater or lesser extent, and Paul not only had scars on his arms, but also on his body.
"Paul, are you okay?" Lu Mingfei asked with concern. In this unfamiliar place, Paul and Kemmerich were the people he was most familiar with.
"I'm fine." Every time the hot water flowed through Paul's body, he grimaced in pain, but he still managed a smile to show that he was fine. But that smile was uglier than crying in Lu Mingfei's opinion.
After taking a bath, they couldn't rest yet. They had to wash their muddy clothes. After all the hard work, it was already past nine o'clock.
They could finally rest. Lu Mingfei lay on the bed, and he felt like he didn't even have the strength to lift a finger.
He had been lying in bed for less than ten seconds when an extremely irresistible fatigue overwhelmed him and he fell asleep instantly.
He was not the only one like this. Almost everyone in the barracks fell into a deep sleep as soon as they got to their beds. The sound of snoring echoed in every corner of the barracks.
Lu Mingfei’s first day of military career ended just like that, but it was just the first day.
"Lu Mingfei, get up quickly, you're going to be late for school." In his dream, Lu Mingfei felt as if he had returned to his original world. His aunt was using her lion roar to wake him up for school. He listened to his aunt's mumbling with nostalgia.
But reality is always cruel.
"Bang!!!" With a loud bang, the door of the barracks was kicked open again, accompanied by a huge roar.
"You bunch of pigs, get up quickly!!! Gather at the training ground right now!!!"
Lu Mingfei opened his eyes and forced himself to get out of bed despite his aching body. He changed his clothes and ran out the door. He knew that a new day had begun.
