Fang Xin put his phone in his pocket.
Shi Tailang and the others were still discussing the upcoming war on the border.
“It’s been a long time since we’ve had a proper fight. This time, let’s have a good, hearty battle and show those Eternal Night Army guys a thing or two.
When I rack up some military merits, I’ll get a promotion and a raise, become a great hero, be appointed Battalion Commander, marry a beautiful and rich woman, and reach the pinnacle of life. Just thinking about it makes me a little excited!”
Bai Yulin, now in his Hei Yulin state, slammed his fist into his palm. “You can only get a few points from tasks at the academy. The battlefield is the real place to earn points.”
Fang Xin still appropriately shattered their illusions. “This time, the large-scale advance isn’t that simple. The Eternal Night Army previously kidnapped a professor from the Divine Court, and they’ve researched some good things. They’re using fierce beasts to attack cities; they’re not fighting a siege, but a war of attrition.”
The group was stunned. “Xin Ge, how do you know that?”
Fang Xin paused slightly. He couldn’t very well tell them that the young master of the Kou Family Army had told him.
“I heard it,” Fang Xin said evasively, then paused and continued, “When the time comes, you guys stick close to me. Don’t run around on the battlefield.”
Although they all wanted to earn merits, since Fang Xin had said so, they didn’t object. After all, they firmly believed that Fang Xin wouldn’t harm them.
Li Bao'er suddenly looked up. “Then, does that mean people from the Divine Court will also go?”
“Most likely!”
Li Bao'er munched on a chip, pouting. “That’s good then!”
It must be said, it’s quite difficult to make a simpleton like Li Bao'er this angry, which shows how detestable those bastards are.
As soon as they returned to their dorm, Shi Tailang was about to arrange a hotpot meal, to avoid the hardship of not being able to eat hotpot on the battlefield.
Unexpectedly, before the soup base even boiled, a notice was issued from above, instructing them to immediately head to the border city.
Shi Tailang looked at the hotpot ingredients, gritting his teeth.
“We can eat it on the way!”
Putting their things into their spatial rings, without much unnecessary talk, and with their previous experience, they quickly arrived at the gathering point.
Xu Boshan stood on a high platform, holding a microphone, and delivered a motivational speech to everyone below.
Fang Xin scanned the crowd.
After all this time, everyone present, even those with the worst academic records, had experienced fighting and killing. Many people, especially those from the Ninth Division, had essentially crawled out of piles of dead bodies, so they didn't feel much panic about going to war.
Some even had eyes filled with eagerness, impatient to reach the battlefield and show off, as earning points by killing enemies and gaining merits on the battlefield was much faster than taking tasks one by one at the academy.
According to Xu Boshan, since they were new recruits, they would only be considered a reserve team on the battlefield. It wouldn't be too late to go in if the first echelon was completely wiped out. This trip was mainly to experience the scene of large-scale warfare firsthand.
Xu Boshan spoke passionately, “Great winds rise, clouds fly! How can we find brave warriors to travel in all directions! The Eternal Night Army remnants must be annihilated at all times; we cannot not annihilate them. Think about it, you take your girlfriend out of the city, eating hotpot and singing songs, and suddenly you’re robbed by the Eternal Night Army remnants! So! A life without Eternal Night Army remnants is a good life!”
After the speech, Xu Boshan handed the microphone to Bai Mao Zai, who was standing to the side. Bai Mao Zai cleared his throat into the microphone, then tapped it, making thumping sounds.
“Depart!”
The plane took off smoothly. The seats on the plane were spacious and adjustable. Each small team had a cubicle. Fang Xin and his group huddled together, eating hotpot.
Bai Mao Zai smelled the aroma from outside and came in.
After a hearty meal, Bai Mao Zai said to Fang Xin, “Come with me!”
Fang Xin was a little confused, not knowing why Bai Mao Zai was calling him, but he still followed. “I’m taking you to see someone. He’s also an old timer from the original Divine Court. The old man heard you were here and asked me to call you over.”
As they spoke, the two went to the cubicle at the very front of the plane.
Pushing open the door, they saw two people sitting inside.
One was a chubby middle-aged man, Xing Longshu, the Deputy Director of the First Division of the Sky Shield Bureau, whom Fang Xin had met before.
The other was an old man with a full head of long, snow-white hair. The old man was tall, with an air of dominance in his brows.
He was twirling two iron balls in his hands.
When they entered, the two were playing Xiangqi.
“Old Lu, I’ve brought him to you!” Zhuge Heng sat down.
The long-haired old man turned his head and glanced at Fang Xin, scrutinizing him from head to toe.
“So you’re Old Fang’s grandson?”
“Fang Xin greets Old Lu!”
“Don’t be nervous, your grandfather and I have been old friends for decades,” Lu Dingjia said with a smile, twirling the two iron balls.
Fang Xin relaxed slightly.
Unexpectedly, Lu Dingjia pointed to his own chest. “Back then, your grandfather’s punch shattered half of my lung. When the second punch came, all the organs on my right side were blasted into pulp. That was the first time I saw my own heart beating with my own eyes. And it was that time that I truly knew how strong your grandfather, that old man, really was. If it weren’t for your grandfather’s old affection, I almost said goodbye to this world.”
Fang Xin, who had just relaxed a moment ago, immediately became vigilant.
“Why are you nervous?” Lu Dingjia turned his head and looked at Fang Xin.
Fang Xin forced a smile. “It’s hard not to be nervous, isn’t it? So, Old Man, are you looking for me to regain some confidence from me?”
Lu Dingjia chuckled, scolding him. “I’m not so pathetic as to try to regain anything from a little kid like you. I just wanted to see what Old Fang’s grandson is like! Why are you standing there? Sit down and talk.”
Fang Xin still sat down.
Lu Dingjia toyed with the chess pieces. “I heard you’re a Level Seven combatant, kid?”
“Yes!”
“Rapid progress, truly excellent. It’s just a pity, though, that it’s only a Strength Talent.”
Fang Xin gritted his teeth. What’s wrong with Strength Talent? Everyone has to say something about it.
I'm a Mangfu, and I'm proud!
“Come, kid, do you know how to play Xiangqi?”
“A little.”
“Longshu, you rest for a bit. Let this kid play a couple of rounds with me.”
Xing Longshu got up and stretched, making way for Fang Xin.
An old man and a young man sat together, playing chess.
After one game, Fang Xin realized that this old man was incredibly good at chess.
During the second game, Fang Xin directly opened a Xiangqi game on his phone, pretending to play on his phone while playing chess with Lu Dingjia.
Lu Dingjia looked at the board in confusion. “How did your skill suddenly improve so much, kid? Were you letting me win the first game?”
Fang Xin, without blushing or panting, replied, “After all, you’re an elder! And my current leader!”
“Excellent ideological awareness!”
After two consecutive games, Lu Dingjia felt increasingly suspicious. He suddenly took the phone from Fang Xin’s hand.
“You bastard! You little rascal! You’re playing me for a fool!”
Fang Xin, with a shameless grin, stood up. Lu Dingjia kicked Fang Xin twice in the backside.
He chuckled, scolding him, and returned the phone to Fang Xin.
Xing Longshu also shook his head with a smile, hands behind his back, and glanced out the window.
“We’ll be arriving soon! Next, we might face a long war of attrition! I don’t know when it will end!”
Lu Dingjia also glanced out the window. “Old Shen said he wants to find some Qilin to repel the beast tide, but how could it be that easy? It’s better to listen to me, just directly go in and capture that professor of theirs! Otherwise, where would we find a Qilin? What’s the difference between that and searching for a needle in a haystack!”
Fang Xin perked up his ears.
So, a Qilin could repel a beast tide. Too bad the Qilin had already ascended to heaven.
It did leave an egg with Fang Xin, but he didn't know if an unhatched egg would be of any use.
Lu Dingjia kicked Fang Xin’s backside. “You little rascal, go back to your seat! We need to discuss things!”
Fang Xin casually patted his backside and returned to his seat.
As they got closer and closer to their destination.
Suddenly.
Fang Xin’s heart stirred.
A sudden, booming heartbeat exploded in his mind.
It was the huge heartbeat emanating from the Qilin Egg.
