Chapter 3: Get a self-defense pistol.

“The dormant defense system is about to activate.”

Hearing this, James remembered Su Mu’s status as an “insider” and, without a moment of hesitation, pushed off the ground and rushed into the Red Queen’s server room.

Just as Danilova, Alice, Kaplan, and others looked at Su Mu with astonished expressions, the front and back doors of the laser corridor suddenly clanged shut, completely sealing off the corridor.

The next second, the computer screen in front of Kaplan flickered wildly, emitting a piercing “beep” sound, and a message popped up: “Weapon system activating.”

Looking at the tightly closed doors and the information on the computer screen, Danilova and the other two, who had almost walked into the laser corridor, turned pale, realizing that Su Mu had saved their lives.

They thanked Su Mu in unison.

Su Mu waved his hand, but his heart was pounding.

He had successfully preserved several super-strong combatants who could provide cover.

It was important to remember that this special task force only consisted of seven people; his actions had saved four, which represented an enormous increase in combat power.

Even James, who was inside the Red Queen’s server room, saw the doors close in front of him and used his comms to express his gratitude to his teammates.

Kaplan’s face was particularly grim; his fingers flew across the keyboard, rapidly attempting to hack the activating weapon system.

As the team’s technical core, he hadn’t detected the anomaly in the laser corridor moments ago, almost putting his comrades, with whom he shared life and death, in a dangerous situation.

If not for Su Mu’s warning, the consequences would have been unimaginable.

Shame and lingering fear intertwined, causing him to hit the keyboard with a bit more force.

For a moment, only the sound of keyboard clicks remained at the corridor entrance.

Su Mu seized this opportunity, looked at Danilova, and asked directly, “Can I borrow a pistol for self-defense?”

Danilova exchanged glances with her two teammates beside her, a hint of hesitation flashing in their eyes.

But then they considered that if Su Mu truly had malicious intent, he wouldn’t have warned them to avoid the danger earlier.

Without further hesitation, she unholstered the pistol from her waist and handed it to Su Mu.

Su Mu excitedly took the gun, the cold metallic sensation spreading from his palm.

He then shamelessly “borrowed” two fully loaded pistol magazines from the other two.

The two generously handed them to Su Mu.

After all, a life-saving grace was incomparable to two pistol magazines.

Under their gaze, Su Mu placed the extra magazines into his jacket pocket, though in reality, he put them into the system’s storage space.

Holding the pistol, he humbly asked Danilova how to use it, including its safety features and how to reload.

Seeing Su Mu’s complete unfamiliarity with weapons, everyone present became even more convinced that Su Mu was a research staff member from the Hive’s interior.

Under Danilova’s guidance, Su Mu quickly mastered how to use the pistol.

Considering that the zombies in the Hive had only been transformed for a few hours and were relatively slow-moving, he suddenly felt fully confident in his novice mission to kill ten zombies.

Of course, the source of this confidence was primarily the pistol in his hand…

After repeated checks, Kaplan raised his hand and indicated, “The weapon system has been completely shut down.”

Everyone exchanged glances; no one dared to move first.

The thrilling scene from moments ago was still vivid in their minds.

Seeing this, Kaplan took a deep breath, opened the laser corridor door, and cautiously led the way inside.

Only after he safely passed through the corridor and opened the last door to rendezvous with James did Danilova and the others pick up their tools and quickly follow.

Su Mu, Alice, and Spence followed behind them, entering the Red Queen’s server room.

Watching Danilova and the others take out their tools, preparing to forcibly restart and shut down the Red Queen, Su Mu did not stop them.

After all, if the Red Queen wasn’t shut down, the zombies wouldn’t come out, and his mission wouldn’t be completed.

“Get out, you cannot enter,” the Red Queen’s virtual projection appeared from the rotating camera on the server room ceiling.

“Don’t mind it; it’s the Red Queen’s virtual projection. It will lie to us, confuse us…” Kaplan explained the origin of the Red Queen’s projection to Alice, Su Mu, and the others, but his hands did not stop working.

Seeing that she couldn’t stop them, the Red Queen’s virtual image suddenly turned to Su Mu and asked, “Why can I not find any information about you in the company’s internal database, or even in the databases of countries worldwide?”

At these words, Su Mu instantly broke out in a cold sweat.

He hadn’t expected the Red Queen to have investigated his background on a global scale!

Fortunately, the others didn’t take her words to heart, as Kaplan had just said that the Red Queen would lie to them and confuse them, trying every means to stop them from shutting her down.

They simply dismissed it as a deception tactic by the Red Queen.

The progress bar for the restart tool on the main console began to advance, and the Red Queen, no longer able to dwell on her doubts about Su Mu, began to plead, “I beg you, don’t shut me down…”

“Please, I beg you.”

As the progress bar reached 100%, the moment Kaplan pressed the control button in his hand, the Red Queen’s expression suddenly turned cold, and she uttered a harsh threat: “You will all die down here.”

In an instant, the entire Hive base plunged into darkness.

Su Mu’s body trembled slightly; this wasn’t fear, but adrenaline preparing him for battle.

With the Red Queen shut down, all access controls failed, and the confined zombies were completely unleashed.

A few seconds later, the emergency lights came on.

Aided by the faint light, Kaplan removed the Red Queen’s motherboard and placed it in his backpack.

“Done.”

“Return the way we came, rendezvous with Jedi and Rain, and leave here as soon as possible,” James commanded, leading the way with his gun raised.

Danilova and the others followed closely.

Alice and Spence, unaware of the danger, continued to follow at the very back, presumably believing that with people leading the way, the rear was safe.

Su Mu didn’t think so.

He gripped his loaded pistol and quickly moved to the middle of the team.

Although there were emergency lights, the surroundings were very dim.

There was no telling where a zombie might suddenly appear.

Currently, the middle position was the safest.

As the group reached halfway, they heard a burst of gunfire.

“Quick, Jedi and Rain are in danger!” James shouted and started running.

Danilova, Kaplan, and the others followed close behind.

Su Mu also started running; he knew that the gunshots they had just heard meant Jedi and Rain, who had stayed in the B restaurant, had encountered zombies.

The initial shots probably meant they had only spotted one.

If not for the novice mission to kill zombies, he really didn’t want to go to that restaurant, which was about to be surrounded by zombies and used to cultivate Lickers.

Two minutes later, the group arrived at the restaurant.

James looked at the injured Rain and asked cautiously, “Why did you shoot just now?”

“There was a survivor.”

“You shot her dead?” James’s eyes widened, his face filled with disbelief.

“She went crazy, she bit me,” Rain responded angrily, bandaging her bitten hand.
