Chapter 1: interview

Madison Avenue, Manhattan, New York.

A Chinese young man in a suit and tie stepped out of a yellow taxi.

Fu Qinghai closed the car door, holding a leather briefcase, and stood by the bustling Madison Avenue, looking up at the building in front of him.

The iron-gray glass curtain wall shimmered in the scorching sun, and its towering spire stood out even among the many skyscrapers in Manhattan.

The building had an irregular conical shape, with a huge, circular helipad extending outward from its top, and on the side of the helipad’s disk, there was a light blue, large, conspicuous “A” shaped light box.

Stark Tower, the Avengers’ New York office.

This building, which was made with CG in the movie, was now clearly presented before Fu Qinghai, so real, so admirable.

Fu Qinghai withdrew his gaze, took a deep breath, and stepped into the building.

“Hello, sir, do you have an appointment?” the blonde OL at the circular front desk in the lobby on the first floor asked with a professional smile.

“Hello, I’m here for an internship interview for your company’s holographic projection project department,” Fu Qinghai calmly handed over a business card, which belonged to a certain HR from Stark Industries who had invited him for the interview.

“Okay, the security guard will take you there,” the beautiful front desk lady confirmed and then whispered a few words into her earpiece.

A Black security guard led Fu Qinghai through layers of security checkpoints to a small office on the second floor.

“Even the security for the Human Resources Department is so complex…” Fu Qinghai secretly clicked his tongue, gaining a new understanding of the security at the Avengers’ New York office.

Inside the small room, a middle-aged white woman behind the desk casually flipped through a few pages of documents on the table.

“Please have a seat, I’ve looked at your resume, Mr. Fu, please give a brief self-introduction.”

“Hello, Ms. Avery, I am Albert Fu, I graduated from Stanford University with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, and during my graduate studies, I followed a renowned professor…”,

“During my doctoral studies, I was deeply involved in Hammer Industries’ laser application research and development project…”

Fu Qinghai sat on the sofa, chest out, head held high, talking eloquently.

A dignified Stanford doctorate, coming to interview for a mere intern position?

This was Stark Industries.

As for…

Stanford University’s bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees? Forged.

Major scientific research projects deeply involved in? Made up.

The Human Resources Manager nodded and said “mm-hmm,” affirming Fu Qinghai’s introduction, while also asking Fu Qinghai questions about some specific research projects on his resume.

Fu Qinghai answered confidently, using a bunch of cobbled-together, lengthy professional English terms to confuse the interviewer.

Things like “the application of the uncertainty principle in complex Zeeman effect,” and “explaining the tricarboxylic acid cycle using superposition principle and stationary state wave function.”

Before the interview, Fu Qinghai was not asked to provide his various research papers from his university days, so he did not attach them to his resume, but if the interviewer had requested to see them, he had already forged them and they were in the leather briefcase he was holding.

Fu Qinghai’s experience as a worker before entering the Reincarnation World had already given him a thorough understanding of the human resources industry; a professional human resources manager does not necessarily mean they are a professional technical engineer, and their understanding of specific specialized fields is very shallow.

“Heh heh, as long as my aura is confident enough, I can fool them however I want,” Fu Qinghai thought to himself. The overly smooth interview process made him a little overconfident.

“Finally,” Fu Qinghai concluded, although he hadn’t mentioned any nonsense like personality, hobbies, or special skills throughout, only fabricated substantial content, but as per custom, he needed to add some corporate culture elements to wrap up, “I deeply admire and revere Mr. Tony Stark, and this is also why I chose Stark Industries right after graduation.”

“Almost every applicant is a fan of Mr. Stark,” the middle-aged white woman smiled indifferently.

“You are very excellent, Mr. Fu, and very…young. Congratulations on passing the interview. If it’s convenient, you can report today afternoon. This is your office address…” The interviewer swiped twice on an electronic tablet, then handed Fu Qinghai a piece of paper, which seemed to have some onboarding instructions written on it.

Fu Qinghai took the paper, thanked her politely, and turned to leave.

Fu Qinghai, walking out of Stark Tower, was full of triumph. Everything went smoothly. An exceptionally young Stanford doctorate? If Fu Qinghai had an African or Latino face, it might seem a bit strange, but he was Chinese.

Chinese, young, and a top student—isn’t that normal?

However, the happy Fu Qinghai did not notice that the office address written on the paper the interviewer gave him did not seem to be “218 Madison Avenue, Stark Tower.”
