Chapter 646: Shadow

Chapter 639: Phantom

It must be said, watching a beautiful woman climb a wall was quite a sight.

Especially after the operation officially began, watching Lina, who had changed into a tight suit and tied up her ponytail, gracefully hooked onto the outer wall of a nearby house, traversing the eaves like a gymnast on a horizontal bar, even hanging upside down and using the gems on the back of her hollow gloves to cut open a third-floor window. Wayne felt that what was called “aerial yoga” was nothing more than this.

With a cat's meow, the glass pane, pushed open and then caught, was gently laid flat on the windowsill, and the window was quietly opened.

It was still Peter the Spider who slipped in first, followed by a light, agile figure, leaving only a rope hanging outside the window.

After the brief admiration ended, the tense part began.

According to Lina's experience, those cultists could discover an intruder at any time, so Wayne and his companions needed to be ready to provide support at any moment.

The next step was a simple matter of “acting on the fly.” If this house was fine, Lina alone could handle it completely; perhaps she could go in, look around, and come out without anyone noticing.

But if there was indeed a problem with this house, then they would directly start the action.

Connal, having learned his lesson, had already prepared the holy ointment given by the monks, and in addition to holy water, he also had a small bottle of medicine said to be used for saving lives in emergencies.

Wayne and the others, who were responsible for breaching the front door, were also carrying “heavy firepower.” Each person had a double-barreled shotgun, which they would discard after use, followed by backup lever-action rifles, primarily aiming for “more than enough in a small space.”

Wayne even picked up a few stones and put them in his pocket beforehand. If his “bomb” ability wasn't guaranteed to explode at the end of the countdown, potentially alerting cultists hiding in other nearby houses if they picked the wrong house, he would have charged it up in advance to avoid insufficient firepower.

“Boom—”

After waiting for less than a minute, Wayne and his companions didn't hear Lina's signal, but they did hear the explosion of high explosives.

Lina usually acted with a certain “relaxedness,” and she certainly wouldn't mess around—at least not this kind of “messing around”—so amidst a series of “clack” sounds from hammers cocking, Sanders kicked open the front door of the house, and Wayne and Connal, covering each other, rushed directly inside.

“Bang!”

Wayne didn't have time to observe the opponent's extraordinary abilities. In his simplified line-drawing vision, he saw strange “dots” accumulating on a figure in the living room, and a shotgun blast spewed towards that person's head.

Sanders, who followed in, was responsible for the follow-up shot. Connal rushed into the corridor connected to the living room, fired a shot, and dodged, then Wayne's aimed gun barrel swung over again.

One person was already down in the corridor, and there was vaguely another figure at the corner of the stairs. Then, a tentacle-like “dot” poured down from above Wayne's head. Wayne dodged backward while firing another shot towards the figure.

Shotguns of that era couldn't sustain continuous feeding. After firing the two shells in the barrel, Wayne directly threw the gun, preventing the opponent from continuing to rush into the corridor that might lead to the back door.

“Damn it!” the opponent cursed as he retreated into the stairwell corner.

His answer was a series of “bang, bang, bang, bang!”

Wayne was still more comfortable with the lever-action rifle. After kicking away the dagger near the hand of the person lying in the corridor, he roughly tracked the movements of the person on the stairs and began to shoot through the wooden steps by feel.

Under Wayne's covering fire, Connal took a big leap, aiming his shotgun up the stairs. He was “booming” on his side, and at the same time, another tentacle-like “dot” also lunged at him from the gap between the banisters.

These “tentacles” didn't seem to be invisible to the naked eye. Connal tried to dodge in mid-air but had nowhere to leverage himself, and Wayne also didn't have time.

It was the strong man Sanders who lunged and swung, and then Connal, like poor Loki being beaten by the Hulk in a movie, was pulled by the ankle and slammed flat onto the ground with a “splat.”

At this moment, the sound of breaking glass, as if someone else was breaking out of a window, came from upstairs, located at the back of the house. Then, outside, there was a continuous series of gunshots, and the louder explosions of high explosives in a relatively open area.

Connal, who had fallen to the ground, quickly grimaced and rolled on the floor, tumbling into the opposite corridor on the other side of the stairwell, completely blocking any potential path to the back door. He wanted to give the middle finger but felt it was inappropriate, so he instead picked up his lever-action rifle with one hand from behind his back and made a fist towards Sanders with the other.

The person who was originally hiding on the stairs seemed to have gone upstairs. Wayne, covered by two guns behind him, rushed to the bottom of the stairs, and after confirming that he could no longer see anyone, the “camera” of his simplified line-drawing vision quietly floated upward.

These guys seemed to have mainly gathered on the second floor before. The high explosives Lina threw seemed to have exploded in the living room on the second floor. Amidst the chaos, a helplessly splayed shoe sole could be seen, and it felt like she herself had retreated back to the third floor, with faint sounds of movement coming from further away.

Amidst the explosions coming from outside the back door, Sanders checked the side of the neck of the person lying in the corridor, nodded slightly to Wayne and Connal, and then Wayne continued to rush upstairs.

The second floor was relatively “clean.” All the visible rooms had their doors open, and no living person was seen in the living room, which occupied nearly half the area.

Wayne was wondering why these guys didn't seem as powerful as the one they “encountered” on the first night, when the slightly muffled gunshots of a bolt-action rifle and the sound of glass breaking seemed to occur simultaneously.

When he rushed to a bedroom next to the living room, he saw that someone who seemed to want to jump out of the window had just been “dissuaded” by an incoming bullet.

I advise you not to jump out of the window. After jumping down from here, you'll encounter Inessa.

Dying by a gun might at least leave a complete corpse...

Then, tentacles composed of “dots” came rushing at him. Wayne first dodged to the wall, then quickly reached out and pushed against the wall, falling to the ground and rolling in a circle, immediately retracting his legs and moving back a distance.

These tentacles could actually pass through walls, as if they “grew out” of the wall, then whipped around a few times like a whip. And they had “reinforcements,” with several more appearing consecutively nearby. Wayne wasn't sure of the exact effect of this extraordinary ability, but just looking at the density of these “dots,” he knew that being touched by them would not end well.

Just as he was about to go around to the front of the door again to find a shooting angle, continuing to “bully the short-armed with long arms,” the person inside had already rushed out at this moment.

In his simplified line-drawing vision, he was now completely enveloped in a mass of tentacles composed of “dots,” looking quite like a “mop covered in shit wildly flailing.”

Wayne, of course, didn't want to get close. While dodging the constantly lashing “tentacles,” he looked for an opportunity to shoot into the pile of tentacles. His simplified line-drawing vision now showed a side effect; the swarming and wildly drifting “dots” obscured the figure, making his position even harder to guess than with ordinary wall-penetration.

Connal and Sanders, who were cooperating in checking other rooms on the second floor for safety, also came to provide support at this moment, working together to continuously shoot at the person whose appearance in Wayne's vision was comparable to the “King of the Swarm.” The gunshots filled the house like surround sound for a moment.

Two distorted lines also crashed down from upstairs into the “swarm” made of “dots.” As Lina poked her head out from the stairs, the figure hiding within the “dots” seemed to have its movements restricted.

Just as Wayne felt that this guy's fate was sealed, his simplified line-drawing vision once again showed a “X-ray penetration-like” effect. It wasn't that Wayne's extraordinary ability had been enhanced, but rather that a “strong light” like lightning directly penetrated all obstacles, making Wayne's vision momentarily seem to only see it.

Or, more accurately, it should be called “Him”...

Damn it,

It was that majestic, large Feathered Serpent phantom again!

The chaotic spiritual pressure, like an air mass that could whip up a hurricane at any moment, made one feel suffocated. Then Lina shouted something, and an even more oppressive aura instantly erupted.

In the frantic warning of his spiritual intuition, Wayne quickly closed his simplified line-drawing vision. Then, illuminated by the faint candlelight in the house, he saw a figure hiding in a pile of snake-like mist, seemingly holding something in one hand, as if that was the “eye of the typhoon” that could stir the entire space within the house.

But it was useless.

The moment the other oppressive aura erupted, that figure was instantly crumpled into a ball like an A4 paper, and then was torn into shreds.

Wayne wasn't sure what the hell he saw in that instant, only feeling his thoughts instantly swept away and submerged by a surging wave.

Before collapsing backward under the impact of the spiritual pressure, only one faint thought remained in Wayne's mind:

Lina, next time you summon the Wise Sage, could you please give a heads-up...
