Chapter 21: Field observation

Lin Fan looked at Weedle in surprise. Logically speaking, Weedle should indeed evolve.

However, Weedle's evolved form, Kakuna, is somewhat special. During this period, it cannot eat and barely moves. Its outer shell gradually hardens over time, while its interior slowly heats up, constantly consuming the energy accumulated during its Weedle stage to break through its shell and evolve into a Beedrill.

Therefore, it is best to let Weedle accumulate enough energy during its Weedle stage, as this will be more beneficial for its evolution.

After thinking for a moment, Lin Fan recalled Weedle into its Poké Ball and turned to walk out of the battle plaza.

He planned to go to a wild forest to find a wild Beedrill colony and carefully observe what preparations the Weedle in the colony make before evolving.

However, observing Pokémon requires spending some time in the wild, so before that, he also needed to go to a store to buy essential wilderness survival supplies.

According to his understanding of Weedle, he would need to stay in the wild for at least a week.

......

Coming out of the store, Lin Fan carried a pure black backpack. It wasn't large, but its internal space was not what its appearance suggested.

This was a relatively inexpensive spatial backpack, and all the supplies Lin Fan had prepared were inside.

"Tsk, I'm really out of money this time. I can find a way to sell the energy cubes stored at home after I get back."

Opening the map app and hailing a ride, Lin Fan headed straight for a forest outside Twilight City.

Water Moon Forest has a long river running through it, beautiful scenery, and the wild Pokémon within are not too strong, making it suitable for beginners to explore.

After getting out of the car, Lin Fan released Weedle, who followed closely behind him, and then he cautiously walked into the forest.

Not all Pokémon are friendly to humans, especially in the competitive environment of the wild, where many Pokémon will actively attack humans.

Every year, there are many news reports of Trainers losing their lives in the wild, so Lin Fan naturally had to be more careful.

Fortunately, the outer part of Water Moon Forest had been swept over again and again by countless Trainers and was not considered dangerous. Lin Fan saw many small Pokémon along the way, such as Shroomish, Zigzagoon, and Pidgey. They only cautiously glanced at Lin Fan and then quickly ran away, not wanting to engage in battle. This suited Lin Fan's intentions perfectly, as he also did not want to casually initiate battles in the wild.

If he accidentally injured those hidden Spearow, then he would have to endure the wrath of their entire colony, and that scene would be no joke.

Lin Fan followed the information he had gathered online and proceeded to the front left.

That was a place where flowers bloomed, and although Beedrill colonies cannot produce honey, they maintain the habit of collecting pollen. It was highly likely to see Beedrill there.

Lin Fan proceeded cautiously, casually dealing with a few wild Pokémon that jumped out to cause trouble, and soon approached his destination.

"I haven't seen any Beedrill coming over, but the leaves here are sparse, with many gnawing marks. It's highly likely that those Weedle ate them."

Lin Fan muttered to himself. Wild Weedle basically feed on leaves, often needing to eat an amount of leaves equivalent to their own weight.

Therefore, this place was most likely where Lin Fan was looking for, but he didn't rush to move forward. Instead, he ran a bit farther, and only after being some distance from the flower bushes did he put down his backpack and begin to set up camp.

Beedrill are Pokémon with extremely strong territorial instincts. Simply trespassing into their territory will often result in their furious pursuit. Lin Fan didn't want to have several holes poked in him by those ferocious stingers, so observing from a distance with binoculars was the most suitable approach.

A brain is a good thing; you can choose not to use it, but you can't not have it.

As dusk fell, Lin Fan took out his tent and set it up, spraying insect repellent around it and scattering some special powder to create the illusion that this was the territory of a powerful Pokémon.

After everything was ready, Lin Fan took Weedle into the tent, turned on the dim light, and instead of making a fire, he directly took out some pre-prepared food and started eating.

Perhaps because it was about to evolve, Weedle's appetite increased again. In a few bites, a high-quality energy cube disappeared.

"You eat so much even in your Weedle stage. I wonder if I'll still be able to afford to raise you after you evolve into a Beedrill."

Lin Fan sighed. Weedle squirmed a little, looking embarrassed, but the movements of its mouth didn't stop at all.

Bugs are iron, rice is steel; one meal missed, and hunger is real.

It only eats three, four, five, or six meals a day, just a little bit~

The atmosphere inside the tent was very warm, and even Water Moon Forest seemed to become quiet.

A silver moon hung high in the sky, casting its pure white glow, illuminating a long, winding river not far from Lin Fan, making it clear and transparent, emitting a shimmering water light, bringing a faint glow to the forest under the night sky.

Not far from Lin Fan's tent, a pair of cold eyes were intently staring at the faintly glowing tent. The scent in the air was very complex, but the owner of the eyes still smelled food.

The faint light shone on it, revealing half of its form.

It was an Ariados.

After a long while, the Ariados gradually retreated. Although Weedle was on its menu, there was also a human next to the target.

Although humans were not inedible, experience told it that ordinary humans were not easy to provoke, so it needed to observe further before deciding whether to act.

Ariados took one last look at the faintly glowing tent and silently turned to leave.

......

In the evening three days later, Lin Fan put away his binoculars, no longer paying attention to the returning Beedrill. After feeding Weedle for what was undoubtedly its umpteenth meal of the day, he began to summarize his gains from the past few days.

"...It seems there weren't many gains."

Lin Fan struggled for a long time, finally scratching his head helplessly, feeling a slight headache.

Over these three days, he had observed the Beedrill and Weedle with meticulous detail, even understanding the personalities of many individuals among them, but he had gained almost nothing regarding the true purpose of his trip.

Those Weedle just ate ordinary leaves every day, occasionally fighting over a few delicious wild berries.

The Silk Thread they spit out was even worse than his own Weedle's earliest Silk Thread, struggling even to pull berries off trees.

However, the Silk Thread of the Beedrill was much stronger; the difference was clearly visible to the naked eye.

"Does the quality of Silk Thread automatically upgrade after Weedle evolves?"

Lin Fan muttered, and after a moment of thought, he did not reject this idea, but another possibility simultaneously emerged in his mind.

He had secretly followed the Beedrill colony around for the past few days, naturally figuring out the location of their nest.

It must be said that as a dominant force in the forest, the Beedrill's nest covered a large area, backed by a small rocky mountain. Especially at the very center, there was an extremely thick large tree, on which countless Kakuna were quietly attached, silently waiting for evolution to arrive.

Fortunately, Lin Fan happened to see some Weedle evolving into Kakuna. The evolution process was very ordinary, with no research value, but before evolving, they all went to a grotto at the base of the small rocky mountain.

According to Lin Fan's observations, that grotto was where the Beedrill resided, and Weedle seemed not to be allowed to enter or exit there, with the exception of before evolution.

Moreover, each Weedle's belly was slightly swollen after coming out, and immediately after, they would use Silk Thread to bind themselves to a tree trunk, evolving into motionless Kakuna, beginning to consume the energy within their bodies, preparing to evolve into the final Beedrill.

After organizing all the information, Lin Fan came to a final conclusion:

"There must be something good in that grotto, and it's something very beneficial for Weedle!"
