Chapter 80: The tide of zombies receded

At the back door, Li Hang looked at Li Yu with a resentful expression, seeing the food in his hand that had gotten soaked in a lot of rain. He wanted to say something, but seeing Li Yu's complete disregard for him, he felt a bit dejected.

He was already very hungry, so he simply didn't say anything more. Then he climbed down the wall and began to eat in a small shed under the wall.

Li Yu stood on the wall, watching the zombies outside the wall, still tirelessly crowding forward. However, under the sturdy wall, they were still unable to break through.

But recently, due to the continuous rain and the zombies' relentless clawing—even with exposed hand bones or fractures, they kept at it—some sections of the wall had sustained minor damage.

However, with the wall being over two meters thick, reinforced with hard steel plates and rebar concrete, it was virtually impossible for the zombies to break through.

"You eat first. I'll go check the front," Li Yu said to Li Hang below the wall, then nodded to Yang Xiaozhu, who had been watching him since he arrived.

He then added, "You two be careful."

Yang Xiaozhu had just replaced someone on the wall. Seeing Li Yu's gaze, she shyly lowered her head and said, "Yu Ge, you too."

Li Hang, below the wall, heard Yang Xiaozhu's squeaky voice and words, and instantly choked. The food in his mouth almost sprayed out, but at that moment, food was too precious, so he forcefully swallowed it down.

His face was flushed, and his mouth was stretched almost to his ears from smiling.

Li Yu glared at him fiercely, then ignored him and walked towards the front gate.

He had walked less than 20 meters when he heard a wailing sound.

"Li Hang, you little brat, I think you're really itching for a beating!" Yang Xiaozhu instantly let out a roar like a lioness, stomped a few steps down the wall, and then grabbed Li Hang's ear. She tried to restrain her shout, but still spoke with extreme anger.

"Ow, ow, ow, Big Sister, Big Sister, it hurts!"

"Big Sister?"

"I'm done eating, I'm going up on the wall."

Li Yu saw from afar that although the two had argued for about ten seconds, they quickly ran back up onto the wall. He nodded.

Front gate.

The zombies were still densely packed. Li Yu replaced his maternal uncle and began to stab zombies with a long spear.

It was the sixth day of the heavy rain.

The wind seemed to gradually diminish.

The thunder also changed from the initial rumbling to muffled thunder, and then to no thunder at all.

By five in the afternoon,

the rain also lessened, from a downpour to a drizzle. The dense dark clouds seemed to be pulled apart by a large hand, revealing the light within.

A little bit of light, as if scattered across the human world, and the sky gradually became brighter.

The rain grew lighter and lighter, until it became a fine drizzle. The zombies also became less frantic, as if their loins had been cut, becoming listless. Gradually, a rich reddish-yellow hue began to streak across the distant horizon.

It was sunset. This touch of red was like a drop of ink falling onto paper, slowly spreading. The dark clouds in the sky slowly receded, and the evening glow filled the sky.

The sun set in the west, an endless twilight. Without the rain, the sky was already bright, and the zombie horde gradually receded.

Everyone looked at the horizon, where a magnificent rainbow hung over the forest, backed by a red and yellow sky, a color that seemed to dye the surrounding clouds.

The scenery was absolutely beautiful!

"It's so beautiful," Li Tie said.

"It's really pretty," Li Gang said.

"Holy crap! It's beautiful!" Yang Tianlong said.

"Horizontal smoke over autumn waters, sparse rain in the setting sun. Birds descend from tall trees, grass insects fly over flat plains. Only by waiting for the bright moon, can we share a thousand miles with you," Lai Xiyue murmured, her eyes drifting towards a certain direction as she recited this poem upon seeing the beautiful scenery.

...

...

“Damn it.”

Meanwhile, in a five-story building in the county town.

Several women collapsed onto the ground after seeing the zombie horde retreat.

"Song Jie, we, we finally made it through! I knew we could do it. Hahahahaha, we finally succeeded!"

"Song Jie, look at that sunset, how beautiful!"

"Ahhh, it's so pretty!"

"Song Jie?"

The four women beside her called out a few times, but still heard no response from Song Min, so they gathered around and saw that Song Min had already fallen asleep.

"Don't make any noise, Song Jie hasn't slept well for the past 48 hours. She's too tired. Don't wake her up," said a clear-faced Xiao Pang. Although she was a bit chubby, it was no longer very noticeable.

"Then let's carry her downstairs. It's all wet up here, she might catch a cold."

Everyone nodded and carefully carried Song Min downstairs.

The retreat of the zombies was like a huge mountain being lifted from everyone's hearts. Although the zombie crisis was over, many survivors of the zombie horde now faced a new problem.

Hunger!

Some survivors endured hunger during this zombie horde and were lucky enough to survive; others starved to death; and some were discovered by zombies, unable to resist, and were ultimately dismembered and eaten by them.

Not everyone could be like Li Yu and his group, with sturdy walls, ample food, and trustworthy companions, united to face the zombie horde.

Therefore, not long after the zombie horde retreated, people began to come out to search for food and supplies.

And in the City Center, 80 kilometers from Li Yu's base, some people also dispersed in all directions, beginning to collect supplies from the surrounding areas.

After the apocalypse arrived and they killed the Village Secretary and others, Li Yu and his group had simply searched for some usable supplies around the base, but they hadn't thoroughly searched further afield.

At that time, his maternal uncle and others hadn't arrived, nor had Li Tie, Li Gang, Yang Tianlong, his third uncle, or the temporary workers. The base's manpower wasn't particularly abundant, and the base's supplies weren't very scarce. To prevent the base from being occupied by outsiders, they hadn't gone out for large-scale scavenging.

However, the base's population has now reached 45 people, and there are many strong, young men. So, they can spare manpower to search for supplies further away.

On the second day after the zombie horde ended, Li Yu and his group prepared to go out and search. On one hand, they planned to replenish the base's supplies, and on the other hand, Li Yu intended to train his troops and observe these temporary workers again.

These temporary workers had been in the base for some time, and their recognition of the base had greatly increased. After all, some workers' families were in the base, and protecting the base meant protecting their families.

They also clearly knew that Li Yu's control over the base was unshakeable. Moreover, they had no motive to shake it, nor did they dare, especially since Li Yu had saved them.

This time, Li Yu planned to take several temporary workers, as well as Li Tie and Zhao Dapao.

So, on the morning of that day, they drove out.

And in the north, where they could not see, 80 kilometers away in the city, a team of people was also driving towards Xin City.
