Chapter 37: I Want Immortal Ascension (Part 6)
Liu Sheng blew out the candle, curled up on the bed, and pulled the quilt up to her chin.
According to the rules, it seemed she was a bit late, wasn't she?
In the dark room, the sound of banging on the door echoed, and her heart pounded like a drum.
Each dull thud was like a blow to her heart, making her breathing rapid and shallow.
Suddenly, with a loud crash, the door was violently knocked open, and a cold wind howled in, the door panel slamming against the wall.
Something had entered.
Liu Sheng's eyes widened, but in the absolute darkness, she could see nothing, only relying on Little Tentacle's weird eyes.
That thing slowly moved into the room, all the female flesh on its body squeezing and fusing together, emitting a horrifying, wet sound of shifting meat.
Heads popped in and out, hair dragging on the ground, sticky with the wet bloodstains, countless eyes staring at Liu Sheng on the bed, meeting her gaze, their eyes hollow yet filled with greed and malice.
The air was filled with a suffocating smell of decay and blood.
Liu Sheng felt a fear she had never experienced before; her body stiffened, and her breathing almost stopped.
Little Tentacle's weird eyes also cowered, frozen.
Liu Sheng knew that the weird objects in front of her were something she could not contend with.
The fleshy weird moved slowly, using its hands, feet, and heads to crawl towards her, each movement accompanied by a sickening sound.
It finally stopped in front of Liu Sheng's bed.
That large mass of flesh changed shape, its upper part growing longer and longer, the top of the fleshy mass bending and slowly extending over Liu Sheng's head.
The heads pushed forward, vying for position, slowly pressing against Liu Sheng's face, their eyes wide, the whites almost protruding from their sockets, countless strands of hair falling onto Liu Sheng's face and the quilt.
Liu Sheng could smell the cold, damp, bloody, and foul breath emanating from those mouths, which made her stomach churn.
She quickly held her breath, her heartbeat pounding against her eardrums, and the disgusting, horrifying sight before her caused her Mental Energy to plummet to freezing point.
If Liu Sheng didn't possess extreme resilience, this scene could have directly scared her into a mental breakdown.
But she still used all her willpower to control every muscle in her body, preventing any trembling.
Finally, perhaps because Liu Sheng had not completely broken the rules, or perhaps because the fleshy weird's true death rule was movement and sound, it actually slowly retreated.
The eyes that had been pressed against Liu Sheng's face flickered with disappointment and cunning, but they still slowly receded to the foot of the bed, leaving streaks of blood on the bed from the hair.
Then the fleshy weird reverted to its meatball form and slowly moved out of the room, disappearing beyond the door, leaving only a trail of filth on the floor.
Liu Sheng remained stiff, not daring to move, her palms covered in cold sweat.
After an unknown amount of time, a faint moonlight gradually appeared outside the door.
Suddenly, under the moonlight, several heads peered out from the doorway, smirking as they watched her. Seeing that she hadn't moved, they finally lowered their heads in complete disappointment and retreated.
Liu Sheng felt a surge of lingering fear. Fortunately, she hadn't moved. She hadn't expected this weird objects to be so cunning, pretending to leave and hiding outside the door, waiting for her to reveal a weakness.
Liu Sheng waited on the bed until all sounds outside completely subsided and human footsteps began to be heard before she finally let out a complete sigh of relief.
She was safe for now, but how long would this safety last?
Liu Sheng once again felt profoundly how weak and utterly outmatched she was in front of truly terrifying weird objects.
Liu Sheng got up to close the door, then found some clothes to clean the bloodstains on her face and body, as well as the dirt on the floor.
Afterward, she moved to a cleaner bed—anyway, the other three beds were empty—covered herself with the quilt, and fell into a deep sleep.
This day had been too long and too tiring; she needed to get enough rest.
...
After an unknown period of sleep, Liu Sheng finally woke up, her mind much clearer. It seemed she hadn't had such a peaceful sleep in a long time.
She didn't move casually; first, she listened to the sounds outside, and Little Tentacle extended out, confirming that there was nothing in the corridor.
The moon outside was still quite round, just slightly missing a small portion.
Counting on her fingers, she had slept for more than half a day, so she could go out.
After leaving her room, Liu Sheng walked directly towards Qiongxiang Hall.
Since she had already agreed to be a helper for the Pig-Head Chef there, she couldn't just work one day and not the next.
The silence in the dorm was even deeper than yesterday, as if all sounds were swallowed by the heavy night and mist. A faint smell of blood permeated the cold air; who knew how many more people had perished in the weird objects disaster last night.
Liu Sheng hurried her steps and arrived at Qiongxiang Hall, where the familiar large door swayed in the gentle breeze.
She gently pushed the door open and stepped inside, only to see that the Pig-Head Chef was not in the back kitchen but in the dining hall.
“You're here.” The Pig-Head Chef's voice was deep and resonant, seemingly revealing a hint of surprise and joy.
If one ignored the fact that he was holding a foot in one hand, and the owner of the foot was limp on the ground, motionless, he could even be considered somewhat benevolent.
“Come over quickly, we need to start working soon.”
Saying that, he dragged the two people he was holding and slowly walked into the back kitchen, leaving two thick bloodstains trailing on the floor.
Liu Sheng seemed to see nothing at all, her expression normal as she followed the Pig-Head Chef into the back kitchen, ignoring the large pots steaming and bubbling with a bloody smell, and the messy ingredients. She naturally picked up the apron she had worn yesterday and tied it on.
Then she walked into the small courtyard, wanting to wash her hands, and happened to see the Pig-Head Chef stuffing the two people he was holding into the well.
She couldn't help but ask in surprise, “This, wouldn't it be... a waste?”
The Pig-Head Chef rolled his eyes at her: “What are you thinking? This is so unappetizing! If we even eat this kind of stuff, what would we become? We might as well be raw-eating, blood-drinking beasts!”
Liu Sheng looked at the Pig-Head Chef's appearance, which was quite similar to some kind of beast, and fell silent.
However, at least she could confirm that yesterday's minced meat was probably not some kind of meat, and Liu Sheng felt much more comfortable, even wanting to eat another large bowl.
The Pig-Head Chef continued, “Since I find you somewhat agreeable, I might as well tell you more. Don't touch the meat zhi that those foolish people love to eat. After all, it's something that harms heaven and reason. Each time you eat it, you'll accumulate a layer of karma, and if you have too much karma, you'll never have the possibility of Immortal Ascension.”
So, the implication was that Immortal Ascension was still possible here.
Liu Sheng grasped this meaning from the Pig-Head Chef's words.
It was also fortunate that she didn't seem to have eaten much; if she had eaten a lot, she wouldn't have nearly starved to death at the beginning.
“Thank you for the reminder.” Liu Sheng sincerely thanked him.
The Pig-Head Chef snorted coldly, then directly instructed Liu Sheng: “It's good that you're sensible and know not to take things for free. There are always people who don't know their place, trying to sneak around and steal. Like those two just now, weren't they used by me for fertilizer?”
Liu Sheng obediently nodded in affirmation.
“Now go to the courtyard and pick some eggplants.” Saying that, the Pig-Head Chef turned and went back to the kitchen.
