Chapter 3: Exploration of the mycelium lineage

After waiting for a while and confirming that Grand Duke Adolf's servant had gone far away, Visari immediately relaxed and slumped onto the bed.

The Ghoul he killed early this morning was almost Visari's biggest secret after his transmigration; if the Church found out, it would be equivalent to putting half his neck in a noose.

As a result, not long after he woke up, someone suddenly came and revealed this secret, causing Visari considerable psychological pressure.

"A Baron? It seems this disaster has turned into a blessing." Recalling the conversation he just had, Visari breathed a sigh of relief.

It seems the action of just pledging allegiance to Grand Duke Adolf achieved an extraordinarily good result.

Not only did that servant's attitude become significantly more enthusiastic, but he also gained many additional benefits; at least he wouldn't be short of witchcraft texts for a while.

After calming his mind, Visari began to test his Fungal Crown Lineage; a craftsman must sharpen his tools before doing his work, and if he couldn't even grasp his own abilities, he wouldn't get far in the future.

Visari gradually emptied his mind and began to sense the situation within his body.

The bacteria divided in an orderly fashion, metabolizing various unique substances that strengthened Visari's muscles and skin; the fungi spread across Visari's tendons and fascia, enhancing their toughness, while the viruses obediently stayed inside the cells, awaiting their master's command.

Visari carefully inventoried the microorganisms in his body; there were three types worth noting, all of which were extraordinary pathogens brought by the Ghoul.

As for the other microorganisms originally present in his body, they were too numerous to count, and their effects were not obvious, so they could only be used as a material library for now.

The first type was a virus with strong camouflage and lethality; it could quickly disguise itself and lurk in the body's immune cells, then rapidly occupy the bone marrow and thymus, and after a period of incubation, it would suddenly erupt, destroying the life's immune system and assisting the other two pathogens in transformation.

The exact duration of this period still required further testing by Visari, but its nature was very similar to the AIDS virus from his previous life.

Visari named it Acute Carrion Immunodeficiency Erosion Virus, or Immunodeficiency Virus for short.

The second type was a special bacterium that traveled through the skin's microvessels; its metabolites would combine with the skin and muscles, exhibiting a pearlescent luster, not only greatly enhancing the strength of both but also capable of devouring peripheral nerve fibers, paralyzing the infected person.

Because the infected were expected to become stiff Pearl Humans, Visari named it Pearl Disease Bacillus.

Finally, there was the core of the Ghoul transformation—the fungus.

After proliferating to a sufficient population size, its hyphae would grow along the bone surface and neural pathways, eventually forming a network of conduits throughout the body.

Its hyphae could act as a substitute for nerves in transmitting signals, and its metabolites could strengthen the toughness and hardness of bones, having peculiar strengthening and replacement effects on many organs.

In fact, Visari was currently using its hyphae to control his body.

Considering the core role this fungus played in Ghoul transformation, Visari named it Ghoul Filamentous Fungus.

All these microorganisms could mutate under Visari's control to acquire new traits; Visari could even combine two completely different genetic sequences to cultivate new strains.

But Visari obviously wouldn't use his own body as a culture medium; if he accidentally mutated a super-strong pathogen and killed himself within seven hours, that would be too ridiculous.

Having sorted out his cheat ability, Visari immediately decided to look at the basic witchcraft in the box, but as soon as he stood up from the bed, Visari's vision went black, and he almost fell back onto the bed.

"Hiss, anemia! It seems the microorganisms consumed a lot of nutrients during reproduction; I need to quickly find something to eat," Visari took a deep breath and stood up, leaning against the wall.

"Wait, why is there so little blood in my body?" Visari strangely raised his hand and scratched his hair, then he discovered the half-healed cut on his wrist.

"These medieval beasts bled me!" Visari's mouth twitched. "No, with this amount of blood loss, a normal person would be completely cold by now."

Considering the special nature of the current era, the other party might have intended to save him but lacked medical skill; Visari didn't count it as murder, just thinking that he would beat them up later if he found out who it was.

However, the priority was still to fill his stomach; the weakness caused by anemia had made Visari's brain somewhat sluggish.

Padua University didn't have something like a cafeteria; Visari walked onto the street and entered a restaurant he usually only visited when indulging.

"Hey, York, get me a big pot of venison, stewed until it's soft and tender, half a plate of mashed potatoes plus half a plate of noodles, with a little Garum fish sauce (similar to pickled herring) poured on top. Oh, and a full cup of deer blood! I'm so hungry I feel like I could eat a whole cow right now."

Visari called out to the familiar waiter; this fine young man clearly recognized Visari, the down-and-out knight, and he joked:

"Oh, what's this? My dear Sir Visari actually ordered a cup of raw deer blood; are you planning to work hard on the ladies tonight? And Garum fish sauce, why have you started eating this dreadful stuff?"

Visari smiled and shook his head, not minding York's teasing; his unusual order of deer blood and fermented fish sauce was to test whether raw and fermented foods would create a special preference for the Ghoul Filamentous Fungus.

The food was served quickly; the stewed venison was as delicious as ever, the dark brown venison stewed in the clay pot until it was crispy, soft, and glutinous, with fragrance seeping between the meat fibers, and the thick gravy wrapped in the sweetness of fat, the rich meaty taste blossoming on the tip of his tongue upon entering his mouth.

The raw deer blood still made Visari look troubled; the strong fishy smell mixed with the taste of rust rushed directly into his nasal cavity, and when he forced himself to swallow, the sensation of the viscous liquid sliding down his throat was like swallowing swamp mud raw, the bloody taste churning in his stomach, causing waves of nauseous shivers.

The dense mashed potatoes were drizzled with gray-black Garum fish sauce; the original fishy odor was completely gone, and a tide-like savory freshness wrapped in milky fragrance melted in his mouth, the semi-rotten fish meat bursting with sweetness between his teeth, soothing the discomfort caused by the raw blood earlier.

Hmm, it seems the Ghoul Filamentous Fungus prefers semi-rotten fermented food.

Visari secretly made a note of it, then quickly finished the large meal in front of him.

Looking at the empty plates in front of him, Visari's stomach was still sending signals of hunger.

After thinking for half a second, Visari raised his hand and called out:

"York, three more pork chops and another plate of mashed potatoes, don't forget the Garum fish sauce!"

After paying the bill, Visari returned to his dormitory, took out the box he kept close to his body from his bosom, and the next step was to officially come into contact with the extraordinary aspects of this world!

Visari controlled the migration of the bacterial colonies within his body, gathering pure Blue Blood free of impurities at his fingertip; with a light scratch of his fingernail, a drop of blood, distant and deep like a star, dripped onto the box.

The box opened automatically, revealing the documents inside.
