Chapter 9: Darkness of the Night

In reality, Zhou Yuxuan's credentials were specifically for dealing with uninformed "Muggles," to prevent anyone from breaking the principle of concealment.

Wei Gong found it quite troublesome when he received this; if it were a mage family, they would simply set up a psychic barrier with a "repel ordinary people" spell. Why would he need to run around manually dispersing ordinary people?

Zhou Yuxuan even said that it usually wouldn't matter if ordinary people were let in, as they wouldn't idly dig three feet deep in abandoned, unfinished buildings looking for ruins, but the current timing was too sensitive, and Zhou Yuxuan felt it was necessary to stop them and investigate.

So Old Tang was responsible for providing armed cover from a distance with a better vantage point, Zhou Yuxuan stopped the first car, and Wei Gong was responsible for the second car.

"Why can the car in front pass, but ours can't?" Su Xiaoqiang hadn't given up, showing a persistent, entangled momentum, her twinkling eyes seemingly saying, 'You must be hiding some secret.'

"No, the one in front can't pass either, which is why someone is already intercepting it."

Wei Gong Shirou shifted his feet, blocking Su Xiaoqiang's attempts to peek.

Suddenly, a loud bang came from the car in front, followed by the sharp sound of shattering glass.

Su Xiaoqiang said, "What's going on? Is this also an incident handled by you archaeologists?"

Wei Gong Shirou spun his head around, only to see Old Tang in front pulling out his gun and shouting, "Brother, quickly come back for backup! These people are crazy! They're trying to transport a carload of monsters into the ruins!"

"What monsters?!"

"Deadmen, out-of-control dragon blood monsters!" Zhou Yuxuan in the distance grabbed his Alchemic gun and fired buckshot. "They refused to negotiate and awakened the frozen Deadmen hidden in the car!"

On this day, Su Xiaoqiang paid a heart-shattering price for her unprovoked curiosity.

In her vision, the vehicle's windows shattered again, and a ball of orange flame suddenly erupted in front of the car, as if someone had thrown a napalm bomb. Two burly men emerged from the car, one of them muttering, and then a supernatural scene unfolded—

Invisible masses of air condensed into several clumps, then exploded with a roar the next second, blasting countless flying fragments from the concrete road.

The young man with drooping eyebrows furthest away was "relatively normally" shooting with an HK416A5. On the other side, the lean young man charged forward directly, a heavy sword like a door in front of him, and in his other hand, a strangely shaped large gun fired a crackling, scattered barrage. As he moved, countless fine streams of iron sand and steel fragments rolled up from the ground.

Crack!

Su Xiaoqiang was impacted by the shattering of her worldview.

Superpowers? Magic?

As her brain reacted violently, sharp claws pierced through the transport vehicle again. The metal plating was easily twisted into holes by inhuman strength, and grotesque monsters covered in blackish-green scales crawled out.

The monsters' dull, scaly skin reflected a cold metallic glint, their faces were either stern or ferocious, their limbs were long and twisted, and their lower bodies resembled mutated giant snakes.

Their eyes emitted a golden glow, either bright or dim, like a pair of chilling, soul-capturing lanterns of death in the deep night. Someone in the distance fired fiercely, but most bullets only sparked on their scales...

Thus, as if from the depths of her bloodline, a chilling fear enveloped Su Xiaoqiang. She felt her body and mind tremble, and finally empathized with the helpless ordinary people in disaster or horror films—

The "Little Heavenly Maiden," born with halos of wealth, fame, and beauty, was nothing more than a helpless ordinary girl when facing impending death.

At this moment, the only person she knew on the battlefield, shrouded in death threats, Wei Gong Shirou, had already charged forward. His Alchemic katana and the sharp claws extended by the first serpent-like Deadman monster clashed in mid-air, producing dazzling sparks.

Whoosh!

Su Xiaoqiang felt her vision blur. Wei Gong's legs glowed with patterns and suddenly accelerated, crossing paths with the Deadman in an instant and turning. The katana hidden in his other hand drew a beautiful, shimmering silver arc from a blind spot. Black blood splattered out, the blade slicing through the Deadman's spine into its nerve ganglia, causing it to fall helplessly as if paralyzed from a high spinal injury... The movements were so beautiful that she almost clapped in amazement, far superior to the over-CGI stunts in movies.

Boom!

The rear car door was violently ripped open, and an arm, more than twice as thick, struck from the darkness. Before Su Xiaoqiang could warn him, Wei Gong, as if he had eyes in the back of his head, blocked the sharp claws with a backhand strike.

An angry roar immediately came from the darkness. The arm exerted frantic force, preventing Wei Gong from advancing, and at the same time, the metal car roof was directly smashed through. A shadowy black snake stood upright, revealing itself to be a tall Deadman, over five meters in length!

The serpent-like Deadman stood on its powerful lower limb muscles, its heavy body leaning down, its shadow covering Wei Gong's entire body. The Deadman roared madly, the foul-smelling mucus in its fangs was truly nauseating. Coincidentally, Old Tang's covering fire arrived just in time, M995 armor-piercing rounds densely striking its back, momentarily causing the Deadman pain and making it release its grip.

Wei Gong seized the opportunity to flip his hand and thrust his blade into the Deadman's neck. Then, using his leg muscles, he stepped on the Deadman's limb and leaped into the air, using his body to rotate the blade over 180 degrees. As he landed on the Deadman's back, the Deadman's grotesque head was completely severed.

Gazing at the Deadman's lower limbs, which remained active and twitched meaninglessly like a conditioned reflex, Wei Gong felt the strangeness of the situation and a chill in his heart.

These monsters, called Deadmen, which are dragon blood runaways, clearly revealed a craving for slaughter and fresh blood. This reminded him of Tohno Akiha's "Crimson Lord" state in Tsukihime when she fell into a reversal impulse, where not only did her emotions become pathological, but she also became addicted to killing and bloodsucking.

However, the Crimson Lord, after all, retained a human form, but these Deadmen had undergone varying degrees of physical alteration with serpentine features. Was this unique to mixed dragon blood, or was it caused by a further deepening of the reversal impulse leading to physical mutation...?

Suppressing his thoughts, Wei Gong was about to continue fighting bravely when a scream suddenly came from behind him.

He turned his head to see Su Xiaoqiang trembling but unable to move from her spot. It turned out that her lower leg was tightly gripped by a greenish-black sharp claw. The Deadman, forced into "high-level paralysis," had actually detached from the battle and quietly crawled near the ordinary person using only its movable forearms... Truly "bullying the weak and fearing the strong."

Uncle Li, next to Su Xiaoqiang, was clearly not scared out of his wits, but his strength was too weak compared to the injured Deadman. Uncle Li furiously kicked the Deadman's skull repeatedly but couldn't move the rock-hard beast.

"Get out of the way!"

Su Xiaoqiang heard Wei Gong shout towards them.

How the hell am I supposed to get out of the way when I'm caught... Su Xiaoqiang was about to speak when she realized Wei Gong was talking to Uncle Li. Uncle Li immediately understood and retreated, and then Su Xiaoqiang heard a sharp, explosive sound in the air—

Two flashes of light struck the Deadman's back of the head and neck, pinning the Deadman to the ground. Upon closer inspection, they were two arrows!

The Deadman's arm lost its strength. After breaking free, Su Xiaoqiang looked up and saw Wei Gong Shirou's heroic posture with his bow, vaguely like a bright light in deep, dark ink. So similar, too similar... Like the mighty, invincible hero in movies, with a handsome and gentle face, almost like he was stepping on colorful auspicious clouds, appearing before her to the admiration of all...

However, in reality, that face held no gentleness, only anxiety, as he shouted, "Go! Drive away!"

Su Xiaoqiang saw several black figures appear. The monsters completely surrounded Wei Gong as if hunting some rare prey. The emotions bottled up in her heart were completely replaced by a surge of anger that shot straight to her head, as if a voice in her mind roared, saying, "I, the Little Heavenly Maiden, am not a coward who abandons her savior and flees for herself. If I'm going, I'll be righteous and take everyone with me..."

But Uncle Li saw that the situation was already extremely critical and that staying would only be a hindrance. He forcibly put her into the car without explanation, and the Audi quickly reversed and sped away.

Su Xiaoqiang, strapped into her seatbelt, watched helplessly as Wei Gong Shirou was swallowed by the dark monsters, disappearing from sight.
