Chapter 2: Hunting in the mountains

Eating flatbread and drinking rice porridge was considered an upper-middle-class standard in this impoverished era, much better than what ordinary people had.

Soon, after eating and drinking his fill, Liu Jin sat on a small stool and let out a satisfied burp, finally having a full stomach.

Zhao Ergou, seeing his mother clear the dishes and enter the kitchen, immediately spoke up!

"Jin-ge,"

"Since we're full, let's get ready to leave the city and see if we can catch any good wild game."

Liu Jin nodded, and the two stood up, greeted Aunt Zhao, and quickly left the courtyard.

As they walked on the city streets, there were quite a few people coming and going.

Even small vendors pushed wooden carts, shouting to the passing citizens!

"Don't miss out, come and see, fresh sesame flatbread, two coins each!"

Liu Jin looked at the bustling streets, the simple people, with sounds constantly reaching his ears, experiencing the Han Dynasty era, and his heart completely accepted all of it.

Suddenly, a voice came from beside him!

"Selling mung beans!"

"High-quality mung beans, come and buy some!"

Liu Jin was slightly stunned. These lines were surprisingly familiar. His eyes immediately swept towards the street.

He saw a red-faced man with phoenix eyes, wearing a green hat, and a long beard. Beside him were two sacks of mung beans.

He was shouting to the passing citizens!

His heart skipped a beat. This appearance, this attire, could it be the legendary Guan Yu?

He recalled in his mind, according to this timeline, Guan Yu had already committed a crime, fled his hometown, and came to Zhuo Commandery in You Province to sell mung beans. Later, he met Zhang Fei and Liu Bei, and the three became sworn brothers.

Liu Jin's lips curved into a smile. He was still selling mung beans, so it seemed he hadn't been recruited by Liu Bei yet.

A thought of poaching him arose in his heart, but he was just a commoner with no reputation in Zhuo Commandery. It would be impossible to persuade Guan Yu to serve him.

The man wasn't a fool; at the very least, he could still sell mung beans on the street and earn a little money. He himself was idle, a pauper, and lived worse than the other man.

At least Liu Bei, at this time, had a certain reputation in Zhuo Commandery, had studied under Lu Zhi, and was a fellow disciple of Gongsun Zan. It was perfectly normal for him to recruit Guan Yu and Zhang Fei.

However, he was a transmigrator after all. When a person wanders outside, his identity is self-proclaimed.

After he returned, he would find a way to build a good relationship with Guan Yu, become good friends, and if there was a chance, recruit him into his command. He absolutely couldn't leave him for Big Bao Bei.

Just like that, the two arrived at the city gate. The soldiers guarding the gate, holding long spears, conducted a routine inspection.

After exiting the city gate, there were many fields and villages on both sides of the road.

The two did not stop, hurrying along the official road towards the distant valley.

A moment later, Zhao Ergou led Liu Jin to the edge of a forest, looked in a certain direction, and excitedly said!

"Jin-ge, the place where I buried the stuff is just ahead."

Liu Jin nodded upon hearing this. The two walked quickly, arriving at the base of a towering tree. Some loose soil at the tree's roots, out of place with the surrounding green grass, was visible.

Without another word, Zhao Ergou took a wooden stick and began to scrape at the ground. After clearing away the soil,

A sharp broadsword appeared, along with a bow and even a dozen arrows.

Liu Jin took the broadsword in his hand and examined it. It gleamed with a cold light and was very sharp. In the Han Dynasty, it was considered a good sword.

Finally, he looked at the bow, drew it, and felt its strength. It was a two-stone bow.

These two items should have come from the army. He grew more suspicious that they were left by Zhao Ergou's father, probably confiscated from the enemy and secretly hidden.

However, he didn't expose him, but instead said with a smile!

"You're a lucky kid; you can even pick up such treasures."

Zhao Ergou scratched his head, chuckling, upon hearing this.

After equipping themselves, the two continued deeper into the mountain forest.

They headed for the remote, old forests where few people ventured, to see if they could hunt some wild game, such as rabbits, wild boars, or roe deer.

Two hours later!

Under a big tree, Liu Jin's eyes were sharp, quietly staring into the bushes ahead.

Branches rustled, and a roe deer with yellowish fur poked out its head, its eyes darting around, clearly looking for something to eat.

A smile appeared on Liu Jin's face. After searching for over an hour, he finally found a roe deer.

Holding the bow, he drew it into a half-moon shape, his eyes slightly narrowed, aiming at the roe deer that was eating green grass.

He gently released his hand, and with a whoosh!

A sharp arrow pierced the air and shot forward.

The roe deer, still grazing, seemed to sense danger approaching. It quickly raised its head, its round eyes looking around.

Just as it was about to react and flee, it was shot through the head by the arrow.

With a thud!

The roe deer fell, gurgling and its legs trembling uncontrollably, seemingly trying to get up and escape.

Unfortunately, the arrow had pierced its head, and blood was still gushing out. After a few twitches, it stopped moving.

Zhao Ergou's face lit up with joy, and he quickly praised!

"Jin-ge, your archery is divine; you can hit it from such a distance."

Liu Jin smiled and nodded, a hint of pride on his face!

His only hobby before transmigrating was archery, so he was very familiar with bows and arrows. As long as the distance wasn't too outrageous, he could hit the target.

Coupled with the fierce folk customs of the Yan and Zhao regions, wielding swords and staffs was basically innate.

The two quickly walked over. The roe deer was completely dead, with only blood still flowing out.

Liu Jin said with a smile!

"This roe deer is quite large, probably around forty catties. It's enough for us to feast on for a while."

Zhao Ergou nodded excitedly, even drooling a little at the sight of the roe deer.

He hadn't eaten meat in a long time, and it seemed he had almost forgotten what it tasted like.

When he got home, he would definitely ask his mother to prepare a lavish meal.

So, the two continued to search in the forest. No matter what kind of prey they found, they would shoot it directly.

The forests and mountains during the Han Dynasty were very remote and desolate. For dozens of miles, there was no sign of human habitation, making them a paradise for these wild animals.

Several hours later, dusk gradually fell.

Under a towering tree, several dead animals were piled up, small ones like wild rabbits and pheasants, and larger ones like roe deer.

These things together weighed about a hundred catties.

In the middle was a pile of firewood, with a wooden stick set up over it, on which a rabbit and a wild pheasant were tied, roasting over the blazing fire.

Liu Jin and Zhao Ergou sat facing each other, looking at the sizzling, oily wild game, their mouths watering uncontrollably.

They had been hunting from day to evening and were already famished.

How could they resist the temptation of the meat's aroma?

After waiting for a moment, the rabbit and wild pheasant were cooked. Although the outside was a bit charred, the aroma of the meat still wafted out.

It was a pity they had left in too much of a hurry and hadn't brought any salt; otherwise, the flavor would have been even richer.

The two ate with relish, their mouths dripping with oil.
