Chapter 38: Ape-Man Attack

Li Lu said, tapping on the screen. "You're busy, and so am I. I checked the data on the terminal; there's a door here connected to a hidden line. These two mechs were transported through these two concealed passages, so this passage is definitely not damaged, at least not after the war, and can transport two Titans. According to the map, there's an exit at a factory near the Harbor."

On the terminal's display, a brand-new passage appeared, running beneath Shangqing City and extending all the way to the eastern coast.

Feng Jun had originally planned to take Li Lu and transport these two power armors to a nearby subway exit, then drive them out of Shangqing City. However, there were simply too many zombies and Mutants in Shangqing City, and there might even be Mutants more powerful than Scale Armor Corpse and Roadblock. Breaking out of the city would be extremely dangerous; escaping through the subway passage was a better option.

Inside the subway station, there were trains for transport and cranes and mechanical arms for handling goods. Although neither Feng Jun nor Li Lu were professional loaders, after overturning a few carriages, they finally managed to place the two power armors onto the transport train.

The subways in the Doomsday all utilized maglev technology, and the driver's cabs of the train heads were equipped with basic AI for assisted driving. After entering the cab and performing simple operations, the train started. After a thorough check with no issues, Feng Jun and Li Lu drove the train out of this underground station.

The maglev train moved exceptionally quietly in the subway. The integrity of this subway tunnel was significantly higher than the tunnels Feng Jun had walked through in the city center. Not only was the tunnel clean and tidy with no debris or bones, but even the overhead ceiling lights would light up in advance as the train passed, and automatically turn off after the train had gone. Compared to the experimental maglev trains in the present world, the maglev trains of the Doomsday could completely levitate thirty centimeters above the tracks, and their speed could reach a thousand kilometers per hour. At this speed, Feng Jun could reach the factory near the Harbor in less than an hour.

This journey was quite fruitful for the two of them. Li Lu was currently fiddling with a plasma rifle. This plasma rifle was nearly one and a half meters long, appearing somewhat massive in Li Lu's hands, as she was only one meter sixty tall, especially with the thicker energy magazine for plasma projectiles. Its appearance was a sci-fi style with distinct angles, and each activation was accompanied by a charging sound. Watching Li Lu constantly fiddling with this gun, she exuded the aura of a battle girl.

Perhaps because the plasma rifle was too large, Li Lu fiddled with it a few times before handing it to Feng Jun, then turned to study the Gauss Rifle. Compared to the bulky and heavy plasma rifle, the Gauss Rifle used lightweight, high-strength alloy materials, making it both sturdy and portable. It used special Gauss projectiles with electromagnetic acceleration technology, allowing for adjustable rate of fire and projectile speed, making this gun more suitable for Li Lu's smaller stature.

Feng Jun weighed the plasma rifle in his hand. Even while wearing a mechanical exoskeleton, he could feel its substantial weight. It was hard to imagine that a future army equipped with such advanced weapons could be defeated by hordes of corpses and Mutants evolved from viruses.

Feng Jun walked over and sat beside Li Lu, asking her, "Has no one in this world thought about unifying again? Defeating the zombies and reclaiming the cities. How could humans with such advanced weapons be defeated by the flesh and blood of zombies?"

Li Lu smiled and said, "You're thinking too simply. The humans in this world face more than just zombies and Mutants. You haven't been in the wasteland long enough to understand the true horror of the wasteland."

Feng Jun shrugged, indicating he didn't understand. For him, someone who had directly transmigrated from the present world, his time in the wasteland was indeed too short, barely four months in total. However, these four months had also allowed him to rapidly transform from an ordinary citizen into the leader of a wasteland settlement. Perhaps his experience had been too smooth, making him a bit complacent.

Li Lu tested the Gauss Rifle in her hand. She was very satisfied with both guns. Although she had found Feng Jun as her reliance, as a Bounty Hunter who had struggled for many years in the wasteland, she still preferred to hold a weapon tightly in her hand. Although Li Lu presented herself as a strong, tough woman in front of Feng Jun, she was well aware of the dangers of the wasteland. There used to be four powerful human bases like Huai City District around Shangqing City, but they had all been successively destroyed in the Doomsday.

While the two were talking, the train arrived at the stopping point. According to the information on the terminal, this was a Tianfu Heavy Industries factory located on the eastern coast of Shangqing City.

It had been abandoned since the war ended. The train slowly pulled into the platform. Unlike the underground station in Shangqing City, after the tunnel gate opened, the train drove directly into an abandoned factory building.

The enormous workshop was empty. It was clear that someone had already moved all useful items out of the factory, leaving only empty gantry cranes and cantilevers. The main gate had also been damaged long ago. A group of Mutated Goats were gathered in one corner of the factory. The sturdy rams surrounded the ewes and lambs behind them, their sharp horns pointing towards the subway train that had entered, and their hooves pawed at the concrete floor, seemingly preparing to attack the train that had suddenly intruded into their territory.

Feng Jun was a bit surprised to see this group of goats. The goats he remembered were only between thirty and one hundred kilograms, and even the largest ones were no more than half a person's height. However, each of these Mutated Goats looked to weigh over a hundred kilograms, and some of the rams were comparable in size to rhinos.

Seeing Feng Jun about to raise his gun again, Li Lu quickly pressed his shoulder and said, "Don't shoot. The Ironhorn Goats are not very aggressive. As long as you don't actively attack them, they won't harm anyone. They are considered relatively docile Mutated Creatures. We just need to go around them and maintain distance, and they won't attack us."

Upon hearing this, Feng Jun lowered the muzzle of his gun and carefully parked the train on the tracks far from the goats. This group of goats truly behaved as Li Lu had said; they just stayed huddled together in the distance. Although a few rams made threatening gestures, none of them took a single step forward.

"Are there many Mutated Creatures here?" Feng Jun asked after stopping the car. On the workshop floor, he could see some unidentified droppings, some granular ones likely goat droppings, but others he couldn't identify.

Li Lu hummed, "We're now in the coastal area south of the city. Before the war, there was a national park nearby. After the war, the animals here were also infected by the virus and mutated. Because it's far from the city, this area has always been occupied by Mutated Creatures."

Feng Jun opened the car door and stepped out of the carriage. He looked around and saw no other threats. The factory's main gate had been completely destroyed, but this saved them the trouble of opening it. The remaining task was to figure out how to drive these two power armors back to Longmen Town.

After getting off the train, Feng Jun carefully examined the Ironhorn Goats. These goats had dark gray wool, and apart from their pointed horns and unusually sturdy physiques, they were no different from mutated goats in reality.

"I wonder if the meat of these goats tastes good; they look quite chewy," Feng Jun muttered.

"You wouldn't want to eat their meat. It's full of heavy metals, and it even tastes metallic in your mouth. But their wool is excellent for keeping warm. I once participated in a mission to hunt them. In the winter of the wasteland, wearing clothes made of Ironhorn wool would definitely prevent frostbite." Li Lu dispelled Feng Jun's idea of eating goat meat. If he really wanted to eat it, he might as well go to the present world and eat unmutated goat meat.

The two began to disengage the devices used to hire the power armors. The rest of the journey would require them to drive the power armors back slowly. Fortunately, the journey was not too far, and one day was enough for the two to rush back to Longmen Town.

Li Lu unfastened a locking rope. Feng Jun climbed to the back of the power armor's neck and opened the safety door of the cockpit. Remembering that this type of power armor could be driven by two people in a very intimate way, he turned to Li Lu and asked, "Want to go together?"

Li Lu rolled her eyes at Feng Jun; "No way."

Feng Jun smiled and was about to enter when suddenly, a feeling of his hair standing on end came from behind his head—it was the murderous intent preceding danger. Feng Jun had experienced this feeling more than once in previous battles. He immediately tilted his body to one side, and a sharpened rebar grazed his left cheek, flying past and striking the power armor's shell before bouncing off.

Feng Jun immediately rolled over and hid behind the power armor. With a thought, a Gauss Rifle appeared in his hand. Li Lu also received the same attack, but she too had a premonition of the attack and had already taken cover under the platform.

"Are you alright? Are you hurt?" Feng Jun shouted to Li Lu.

Li Lu also raised her Gauss Rifle and leaned against the platform. She had already clearly seen the attacking enemy: "I'm fine. Watch out for covering fire. These monkeys are very troublesome."

From one side of the factory came a noisy and ear-piercing screeching sound, somewhat like monkey calls. Feng Jun looked and indeed saw a group of monkeys, but their size was human-like, numbering twenty to thirty. However, there were also more Ape-men continuously pouring in from the factory's main gate.

"Be careful of the Ape-men's thrown objects; they are very strong and will cooperate with each other." Li Lu threw two grenades at the approaching Ape-men. The explosions blew away the two closest Ape-men. The previous sneak attack must have been thrown by these two Ape-men who had gotten close.

Feng Jun took the opportunity to roll on the ground, diving behind a cover on Li Lu's side and shooting down a few Ape-men charging at the front. Only then did he realize that they were almost surrounded in the factory, with these creatures called Ape-men all around them.
