Chapter 45: Professors at St. Byrons

Using 【Silver Moon Slash】 doesn't require casting materials; it only requires drawing light trails in the air with a limb. The silver light trails can slash forward, thus manifesting an attack.

Before midnight, Xia De repeatedly tried many times indoors with the curtains drawn, making light trails appear and then having them slash forward. He was very excited; although he had previously tried Telekinesis, Blood Echo, and Light Spell, 【Silver Moon Slash】 was what truly fit his imagination of “power” and “mystery.”

Unfortunately, Xia De was only a beginner, with a shallow understanding of the Silver Moon elemental rune and very little spirit, so those light trails couldn't even leave obvious marks on the wall.

But if one only wanted to harm a fragile human body, it would probably be enough at close range.

Although this Miracle was temporarily of ordinary power, the light trail left in the air was extremely pretty, even more elegant and noble than the form described in the book, which attracted the curious orange cat Mia.

Of course, the above four Miracles from the courses were only provided for free by the College. If Xia De wanted to obtain more Miracles from the College, he could inquire at the Library and then pay to get the Knowledge of those Miracles.

The professors also have different Miracles and spells in their collections, and getting high scores in their courses is also a way to obtain free Miracles and spells.

Regarding the College's Miracles and spells, Doctor Schneider believed that the Library's pricing was unreasonable and was the College's “exploitation” of Letter-based Ring術士.

Instead of buying from the College, Xia De should buy from his group members and local Ring術士. The College should only be used as a channel for obtaining rare Miracles and spells.

But no matter what, the Outsider had completely stepped into the mysterious and extraordinary gate of the bizarre Steam Age.

The Outsider summarized his current situation and found that what he lacked most was neither time nor experience, but pounds. Therefore, he became even more determined to operate this Detective agency; this was currently the best way he could touch to earn money.

“Earn pounds by relying on commissions, and then acquire Knowledge from Saint Byron's. Obtain the Four Elemental Runes, and continuously advance. Even if I can't go back, I must witness this mysterious and magnificent world.”

Because he had his own house, Xia De was no longer as depressed as he had been in the past few days.

As for copying books from the past world, or profiting in the Steam Age with Knowledge from the past world, these would have to wait until he had established himself here and gained more power before he could make detailed plans.

The entire day was spent playing with the cat and reading books. Xia De, who had mastered his first Miracle, was still very happy even though he had no income today.

Thus, it came to this evening. Seeing the grandfather clock show it was already eleven o'clock, Xia De first locked the nocturnal orange cat Mia in the bedroom, then moved the coffee table and sofa to make space.

He placed the four chairs from beside the dining table into the living room, strictly correcting their direction with a compass, and finally filled a basin with water and placed it in the center of the four chairs.

He changed into the only formal suit in his wardrobe, closed the curtains, and adjusted the living room's gas lamp to a softly illuminating warm yellow state.

Only then did he sit on the chair facing due north, a match in one hand and the elective course list scroll in the other. He stared at the clock until it finally approached twelve o'clock, then quickly struck a match on the armrest of the chair.

Because he used too much force, the match broke in the middle. Xia De was slightly startled, then immediately pulled out another one from the matchbox on his lap.

Matches of this era were not safety matches, and there was no rough area on the side of the matchbox for striking. Drawing a match and striking it on the ground, shoe sole, or wall was the common practice.

The second match was finally lit successfully. Xia De looked up at the clock and, after hearing the first chime, immediately lit the scroll. The parchment scroll caught fire almost instantly. Seeing the flame appear, he immediately threw the scroll into the water in front of him.

Although he had prepared for it, Xia De was still somewhat surprised to see the scroll turn into scattered blue light points in the basin upon entering the water:

“What is this?”

He thought to himself, and the woman's voice in his mind unexpectedly spoke:

It is not a Miracle or a spell, but a more ancient mystical power; this is a certain ritual.

“A ritual?”

Before he could get further explanation, he saw the entire basin of water begin to radiate light. A wind began to blow indoors, even with the windows closed. In that wind, three beams of light projected from the basin, separately towards the east, west, and south.

Thus, three blue, transparent human figures gradually became clear from their blurriness, appearing on the chairs Xia De had prepared. Xia De even saw characters swimming within their transparent bodies, but even deciphering a single one caused his head to throb, so, learning from the lesson of the darkness box, he did not maintain that intense curiosity.

The appearance of the three made the room suddenly turn cold.

Sitting directly opposite Xia De, facing south, was an old man wearing round-rimmed glasses. He was dressed in a formal black suit, even taller than Xia De, with a pocket watch chain extending from his chest pocket and fastened to a button on his chest:

“Vice Dean of Saint Byron's Comprehensive College, Chief of Student Management, Professor Harms Sanchez of the Library Management College.”

Professor Sanchez introduced himself in very standard delarion, nodding slightly to Xia De.

This name was the signature left in the message; this was the person who arranged to meet Xia De in this way.

Sitting on the chair to the east was a middle-aged man who appeared to be in his forties, thin but with a determined expression. He also wore a black suit with a white shirt, and the buttons on his cuffs bore the Saint Byron's Comprehensive College emblem, a book locked with a chain.

His ears seemed somewhat pointed, different from a normal person's:

“Vice Dean of History, Professor Blacksen Garcia.”

His delarion was clearly not as standard as Professor Sanchez's. In the current world, southern carson rick and northern delarion are common languages, so perhaps Professor Garcia was originally from the south.

Finally, the person sitting on the western chair was a pretty curly-haired lady in her thirties. She wore a monocle over her right eye and was dressed in a common style blue female clerk's uniform, holding a clipboard and a pen.

She nodded kindly to Xia De, speaking less formally than the two professors:

“I am Lax Jones from the College Secretary's Office. According to regulations, when College professors communicate with Letter-based Ring術士 outside of teaching situations, a secretary from the Secretary's Office must record the conversation and file it. This is both to protect you and to protect the secrets of Saint Byron's.”

“I understand, Professor Sanchez, Professor Garcia, Miss Jones, good evening… Would you like some hot tea? My black tea here is quite good.”

After a slight surprise, Xia De politely said to the three transparent figures. He wondered if this kind of ritual was similar in principle to a projector. The cold atmosphere at this moment, however, suggested that perhaps the original purpose of the ritual was not to hold remote meetings.
