Chapter 62: The value of literacy

“Then, after reading this book, do you have a headache?”

Doctor Schneider asked again.

“Do I? Probably…”

He observed the expressions on their faces:

“Probably, yes. I fell asleep as soon as I finished reading it.”

Xia De said hesitantly. In truth, he had spent some time playing with Mia that night, which delayed him. He had stayed up too late reading and couldn’t bear it anymore, so he fell asleep. He did feel a headache, but it was most likely because he slept too late and was woken up too early by a hungry cat in the morning.

“This is normal. Reading these books that contain crazy Knowledge will affect you. Even if a Ring術士 has another self to block the direct power of Knowledge, the Ring術士 themselves will still be affected. Xia De, you don’t have to be impatient. Obtaining Ling Runes takes time.”

The doctor kindly advised him. Xia De nodded with his mouth closed, then asked in his mind:

“Is my spirit strong, or are you helping me block those influences?”

【You are me, I am you. There is no difference.】

During the study session, Xia De could only understand half of the difficulties in Ring術士 studies that Doctor Schneider and Louisa brought up.

Doctor Schneider recently participated in an elective course called “Aether Mechanics.” The course itself was only open to Ring術士 of PentaCircle and above, but it didn’t teach power, only theoretical research. The standard name of the course should be “Mechanics of Ling,” which is the study of the interaction and effect of the idealistic existence of Ling with matter.

However, Professor Rutherford, who taught this course, preferred the ancient term for Ling, which was “Aether,” hence the course name Aether Mechanics.

This course was very difficult to understand and belonged to the cutting edge of Ring術士 theoretical courses. The doctor certainly wasn’t aspiring to conduct theoretical research; he wasn’t interested in the course itself. He just wanted to use it to get acquainted with Professor Rutherford.

This History Academy professor was quite formidable and had considerable accomplishments in 【Time-Space】 Miracles. Xia De would also come into contact with him in his senior year.

Doctor Schneider could hardly understand the content of the course. While doubting his own intelligence, he hoped to discuss topics like “Ling’s completely different theory,” “Hilbert Aether space,” and “phenomenal change” with Louisa, who was one year his junior, to find new ideas.

Xia De believed that Louisa’s bewildered expression at the moment was very similar to his own when he first ventured into the field of mystical theory.

Compared to the doctor, who overconfidently chose “Aether Mechanics” and fell into deep distress because of it, Louisa’s problems were much simpler.

She was preparing for the July exam season, planning to complete her fourth-year non-practical courses. Therefore, she had temporarily put aside her main profession, which was writing novels, and focused entirely on memorizing and understanding theoretical course Knowledge.

The golden-haired Writer’s biggest challenge at the moment was ancient languages. Xia De’s courses in this area were only introductory, while Louisa already needed to apply them practically.

She had already learned that the general exam content would be selected from the book “The Four Elements of Pursuit: Wind and Fire.” This book was written in the fourth-season southern tribal language, Xavico, and the book itself was one of the mystical books inscribed with the elements 【Wind】 and 【Fire】.

Louisa hoped that the doctor could help her with a preliminary translation of this thick, hundred-plus-page book, but the doctor immediately shook his head upon hearing the title:

“I passed the exams for over a dozen ancient languages I studied, all with passing grades. Louisa, it’s not that I don’t want to help you; it’s that I can’t help you.”

He clearly recalled the scene years ago when he was preparing for ancient language exams, and his entire body recoiled from the book in Louisa’s hand.

Sitting beside them, Xia De, while the two argued about how to pass the exam, leaned over and glanced at the old blue ink handwritten book opened to page 29.

He immediately understood the content of less than 200 Ling Runes on both pages, which roughly described the story of a personified wind element traveling in the Abyss of Madness.

Feeling a slight throbbing in his temples, Xia De averted his gaze. He had indeed understood a language he completely didn’t know again, but the power of the language itself was harming him.

“I think I can help you with the translation.”

Xia De said softly.

The so-called “golden finger,” or special ability, of the outsider in this world, besides the woman with the pleasant laugh in his head, was only the ability to understand all languages. This ability was quite dangerous, because the older and more mysterious a language was, the more dangerous it became. A good example was the recent loss of control of the Poet Grade relic, the darkness box. Perhaps one day Xia De would die from his head exploding because he translated something he shouldn't have.

But for the study of Ring術士, this ability was quite useful. He had considered keeping this a secret from everyone, but it was clear that revealing some of the secret would bring him more benefits.

“Xia De, you understand it?”

Doctor Schneider asked hesitantly. He had been leaning back on the sofa to avoid the paper and pen Louisa handed him. Now he sat upright and casually pointed to a Ling Rune on the page:

“What does this mean?”

“Abyss.”

Xia De said, then looked at the doctor, who then looked at the Writer:

“Is the translation correct? I’m only at a passing level; I don’t understand these.”

“Probably… right.”

Louisa, who wasn’t even at a passing level, said:

“But how do you know this?”

“I’m not sure either. Just now, the 【Time-Space】 Ling Rune suddenly flashed on my Destiny Ring… then ‘another me’ prompted me that I understood this language.”

The doctor and the Writer simultaneously showed expressions of sudden understanding:

“the moment you came into contact with the ancient language, the power of 【Time-Space】 guided you to acquire past Knowledge. So that’s how it is.”

They provided an explanation for Xia De.

This wasn’t a fabrication, as Ling Runes sometimes did act on their own without any physical contact.

“Then, Mr. Hamilton, can you help me translate this book?”

Louisa handed the paper and pen to Xia De again:

“Two weeks, before mid-July. A simple translation will do; it doesn’t have to be perfectly precise. On one hand, it’s for your mental health. I don’t want a fellow Ring術士 in my group to lose control because of my exam; on the other hand, if I get an exceptionally high score, I won’t be able to answer the professor’s questions at all.”

Her thinking was very thorough.

“I think two weeks should be fine.”

Xia De nodded, and the golden-haired Writer finally showed a relieved smile:

“I won’t let you do it for free. I can give you a rare spell, 【Frog’s Leap】. This can give you stronger jumping ability for a short period. Aside from needing disgusting frog legs as a casting material, it has almost no drawbacks. This is a quite rare spell. When I contributed it to the School Library, I received two practical credits at once.”

Xia De certainly didn’t refuse.
