Chapter 8: Fellow traveler, the black magician reappears

“Sore wa dou ka na! (That’s not for certain!)”

Kagura Kiryu’s lips curved into a smile as he uttered that famous line from Yugi.

“After Killer Tomato is destroyed by battle, its special effect activates.”

Mio Yozaki: “Nani?”

“When this card is destroyed by battle, I can Special Summon one Dark Attribute monster with 1500 or less ATK from my Deck in Attack Position.”

Kagura Kiryu opened his Deck, found a card, and slapped it onto his Duel Disk: “I Special Summon Black Forest Witch, with 1100 ATK.”

The Black Forest Witch, a purple-haired lady in a black robe with three eyes, raised her hands to her chest, closing her eyes in a prayer-like pose, kneeling on the Duel Field.

Only the vertical pupil on her forehead was wide open, staring intently at her opponent, creating a very eerie scene.

Black Forest Witch, Level 4, Dark Attribute, Magician, ATK 1100, Effect Monster.

“Furthermore, since a monster was sent to my Graveyard, I can activate this Set Card.”

Kagura Kiryu pressed a button on his Duel Disk, and a Trap Card was revealed.

On the card’s artwork, two men were at the edge of a cliff; one man was grabbing the other’s leg, as if about to drag him into the abyss.

“Trap Card, Ring of Destruction, activate.”

Kagura Kiryu pointed to Plant Lion on Mio Yozaki’s field: “If a monster is sent to my Graveyard, I can select one monster on the field as a target and destroy it!”

“I choose the Plant Lion on your field!”

He waved his hand: “Perish with the monster you destroyed!”

“Eek!”

The Killer Tomato from Kagura Kiryu’s Graveyard suddenly jumped out, grinning maliciously as it crashed into the Plant Lion. The Plant Lion gasped in shock, its expression as if saying:

‘Don’t come over here! We’re both plants, let a brother go!’

But it was clearly useless; the Killer Tomato had just been mercilessly crushed by the lion, and this time it was here for revenge:

‘You didn’t spare me, so how could I spare you? Die!’

“Boom!”

Both monsters shattered into pieces, creating a gust of wind. Mio Yozaki raised her hand to shield herself, a hint of a smile appearing on her face: “Not bad, kid.”

Immediately, knowledgeable Duelists spoke up. They were more skilled than the average bystander and exclaimed in shock:

“First, he changed Killer Tomato to a lower Defense Position to bait the opponent’s attack, then used the Trap Card’s effect to bury the opponent’s higher ATK monster!”

“What a powerful combo! To set up such a play in the first turn, just who is this person?”

The onlookers buzzed with discussion. Kagura Kiryu felt a bit awkward from the praise. No, what’s so advanced about this? They’re just praising him for the sake of it, right?

It made him feel like he had summoned The Creator God of Light in one turn.

(The Creator God of Light requires Tributing three Divine-Beast cards from your field to Special Summon. If successfully summoned, the player immediately wins, but the conditions are extremely stringent.)

This Ring of Destruction was a card that came with his Deck, already considered a relatively high-quality trap. Its activation conditions weren’t too strict.

But to be honest, it still couldn’t compare to the Knights of Hanoi’s Sublime Knightly Power.

If he didn’t have so few useful cards, he would have long since kicked out this early-game trap.

“However, don’t think I’ll face your turn with an empty field!”

Mio Yozaki’s smile faded, replaced by a serious expression befitting a strong opponent. She inserted a card into her Duel Disk: “I activate the Equip Spell, Premature Burial!”

“I pay 800 Life Points to revive one monster from my Graveyard to the field and equip this card to it.”

Mio Yozaki: LP4000 → LP3200.

Mio Yozaki stoically endured the slight pain of Life Point loss. A card popped out of her Duel Disk’s Graveyard zone: “I choose Plant Lion!”

Plant Lion leaped back onto the Duel Disk, performing an instant revival, baring its fangs and claws at Kagura Kiryu, as if saying:

‘Heh, I’m back, old man! If you’ve got the guts, try to kill me again!’

Plant Lion, ATK 1600 → ATK 1900.

“My Battle Phase has ended, so I’ll Set two cards and end my turn.”

Mio Yozaki swiftly Set two cards from her hand, and two dark Set Cards appeared in her Spell & Trap Zone.

Kagura Kiryu felt a little nervous. No, Mio-jie, are you also a dark Duelist?

Plant Lion was a card used by Izayoi Aki, the female protagonist of Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s. Mio Yozaki also looked very much like Izayoi Aki. Could she have also inherited Izayoi Aki’s tendency towards a dark playstyle?

But no matter what, the Duel had to continue.

Kagura Kiryu placed his hand on top of his Deck: “Then it’s my turn. My turn, Draw!”

Seeing the card he drew, he almost burst out laughing: “I activate the Spell Card, Pot of Greed! I draw two cards from my Deck!”

Pot of Greed, the forbidden card among forbidden cards. Its effect is simple and brutal: a net gain of one card with no cost.

In Yu-Gi-Oh!, a game where hand advantage is extremely crucial, a single card difference means a huge resource disparity.

It was precisely for this reason that this card was swiftly locked away by Konami, being listed as a Forbidden Card on March 1, 2006.

At that time, Kagura Kiryu was still a baby who might not have even watched TV, so he naturally couldn’t have used this card.

By the time he grew up and got into Yu-Gi-Oh!, even the kids playing in the village knew this card was forbidden, so he naturally couldn’t use it.

He never expected to get to use it in the original work after transmigrating.

It was a shame he only had one Pot of Greed in his Deck.

Hmm, in the anime, this card seemed to be a common N card, very cheap. He definitely had to find a way to get three copies later.

Also, Angel's Charity, Graceful Charity, and the like, all three copies, so he could draw cards to his heart’s content.

A thick-lipped green goblin pot with a large yellow toothy grin appeared, and Kagura Kiryu’s Duel Disk immediately displayed the prompt to allow drawing cards.

He drew two cards from his Deck, and Pot of Greed immediately shattered.

Kagura Kiryu looked at the cards in his hand, again almost unable to help but laugh.

He looked at Mio Yozaki and said with a smile: “It seems this guy really wants to face you too, Mio-jie.”

Mio Yozaki looked a bit nervous, her fingertips gripping the cards tightly. Masaka, had he already drawn that card?

Kagura Kiryu added the drawn card to his hand, then picked out another: “Then, let me do some preparations.”

“First, I Summon this card, Madouka Rijin!”

A yellow, comical clown with slender limbs bounced onto the Duel Field. It had a pointed nose and a tall red hat, with a “?” symbol on its face.

Madouka Rijin, Level 4, Dark Attribute, Magician, ATK 1300, Effect Monster.

“As long as this card exists in the Monster Zone, once per turn, besides your Normal Summon, you can Tribute Summon one Magician monster in Attack Position.”

“Tribute Summon? Magician?”

Mio Yozaki looked at the two monsters on Kagura Kiryu’s field: “I see, you’ve already gathered the Tributes?”

“That’s right,” Kagura Kiryu held up a card: “A Level 5 or 6 Tribute Monster requires one Tribute, but a Level 7 or higher monster requires two Tributes.”

“I Tribute Black Forest Witch and Madouka Rijin on my field to Summon this ultimate Magician!”

Black Forest Witch and Madouka Rijin dissipated into specks of light. Kagura Kiryu slammed the card he held high onto his Duel Disk.

“The strongest Magician, transcending three millennia of time and bonds, my most loyal servant, Black Magician, Summon!”

“Nani!?”

The entire venue erupted in gasps.
