Chapter 18: The grace of that arrow

"Caslo! Tell everyone to disrupt the dragon and create conditions for Bard."

"By the way! Tell the boys... they are very brave, protect themselves well." Roland stopped Caslo who was about to leave and gave him a worried reminder.

"Tell them to attack the lower left wing, where the scales are loose. Also, remember to tell them not to be stingy and to use the best Star Silver Steel armor-piercing arrows!" Roland shouted as he looked at Caslo's back.

"To be honest... you don't look like a lord... you look like an old lady with countless instructions." Bard looked at Roland with a strange expression.

"As the last lord of Lagran... I have to be responsible for my people!" Roland said firmly.

"But where is Lagrande?" Bud couldn't help but ask curiously.

"In the far east...she has disappeared..." Roland obviously didn't want to continue this topic.

Bard saw Roland's silence and assumed he was being reminded of a sad past. He knew the pain of losing his homeland. But Roland remained silent because he couldn't explain it! Do you want me to tell Bard: Hey, man, the Raglan Empire emerged in Middle-earth at the end of the Fourth Age, and its rule encompassed all of Rhun and most of Rhovanion?

"I hope your archery is accurate enough, otherwise... we can only kill him!" Roland looked at Bard and drew out the Dragon Slaying Sword.

"What is this?" Bard was amazed as he looked at the shining Dragon Slaying Sword.

"An ancestral weapon... This sword has slain countless dragons. It's no match for a flying dragon like Smaug!" Roland looked at Bard as if he were a country bumpkin.

"Let's go! Let's take down the dwarf spear launcher." Roland said suddenly.

"How else do you plan to use this thing? Throw it with your hands?" Roland pointed at the black arrow in Bard's hand.

"Hey!" Roland and Bard struggled to lower the dwarf spear launcher with a rope.

"Hide it well and don't let it get destroyed. If it gets destroyed, we'll have no choice but to run away." Roland patted the heavy crossbow with four arms.

"I am fire, I am - death!" The angry Smaug flew towards Lake Town.

"The dragon is coming!" roared a Badaniyan archer on the lookout.

"Shoot!" Several archers around shouted at the same time.

"Swish, swish, swish~" The star silver steel armor-piercing arrow whizzed off the bow and rushed towards the evil dragon.

"Dang! Ding! Chi!" Several armor-piercing arrows were bounced off, and only one lucky one hit the gap between Smaug's scales.

"Roar! Damn ants! How could you hurt me!" Smaug shouted angrily. Even if the armor-piercing arrow, which was about one meter long, penetrated the dragon's skin, it could not penetrate into the vital part. For the huge dragon, it was like being pricked by a needle. But for Smaug, it was a very embarrassing thing. After all, the defense he was proud of was ruthlessly trampled upon by the tiny archers of humans.

"Whoosh~" The hot dragon breath swept over, and a pillar of fire tens of meters long came down head-on.

"Run!" Several shooters turned over and jumped off the wooden building, some dived into the water and some slipped into the alley.

"Fire!" Smaug flew over Lake-town, and a dozen archers along the way seized the opportunity to launch an attack.

"Ang!" Several more star silver steel armor-piercing arrows penetrated the hard dragon scales. They lost their power less than three inches into the flesh and hung on the dragon's body.

"Damn it! Retreat! His skin is too thick! We can't shoot through it!" A Battanian archer looked at Smaug who turned back and was about to dive and waved to the archers on his left and right.

"Boom!" As soon as they left, the overwhelming dragon flames submerged the place where they were.

"Sir! This creature is too difficult to kill! Is it a flying dragon? It's even more shameless than a giant dragon!" Kaslo came back covered in dust. From the black spots on his armor, it can be seen that this guy had just withstood a dragon's breath.

"How about I go up and beat him?" Caslo whispered.

"Do you think the two of you are proportional to your size as dragons? Go up there and be targets?" Roland looked at him with the pitying eyes of a fool.

"Tell the brothers! You can retreat when the arrows are shot into nothingness!" Roland ordered.

"If they stay, they will only cause more trouble. The armor-piercing arrows are too short..." Roland sighed helplessly as he looked at Smaug raging in the sky.

"Bard! Don't mess around!" Seeing Bard pushing out the heavy crossbow, Roland quickly pushed him back.

"Do you think now is the right time?" Roland grabbed him and shouted.

"We only have one chance to shoot! Bard!" Roland said heavily.

"We have to make him fall! Think about your ancestors! Only if he falls will we have a chance!" Roland sighed.

"Damn it!" Bud punched the wall.

"Look, what have we done?" Bilber said in pain as he looked at the burning Long Lake Town.

"Poor people..." Balin murmured softly.

Behind him, a group of dwarves sat slumped or leaned against the wall, their faces etched with pain. The fire in the distant Long Lake Town illuminated their faces. However, thanks to Roland, Long Lake Town was in a much better state than it had been in history; at least no one had perished in the flames from the dragon's breath.

Only Thorin was facing the Lonely Mountain, wondering what he was thinking. Bilbur looked at Thorin, frowned, and said nothing.

"My arrows are empty!" A Badaniyan archer who was frantically pulling the bow reached into the quiver behind his back to draw an arrow, but unfortunately he found nothing.

"I only have two left!"

"Mine's gone too!"

"I have five more here, share them all!"

Such scenes were happening all over Changhu Town. Archers who had used up all their arrows moved to the outskirts of the town, pulled out small wooden boats that had been hidden long ago from various corners, and rowed them into the lake under the cover of night.

"It seems that the archers have basically used up all their arrows..." Caslo said helplessly as he looked at the arrows in the sky that were becoming increasingly sparse.

Smaug was still venting his anger in the sky, breathing wildly in all directions in a show of force. The scorching dragon flames boiled the water in many waterways in the town.

"Sir! All the archers should retreat!" Kaslo found Roland and Bud.

Roland looked closely and saw that there were only three Badaniyan archers behind Kaslo. The others must have either left or died under the dragon's breath...

"Bard! Wind up the bowstring! Let's go get Smaug's attention!" Roland patted Bard's shoulder and led everyone out of the alley.

At this moment, Smaug's body was pierced by hundreds of sharp arrows, and the membranes on his wings were shot with holes... Although he looked miserable, in fact, the injuries were not even superficial.

"Shoot him!" Roland ordered.

"Ding ding dang dang~" A crisp sound was heard on Smaug's scales. Smaug was immediately enraged by this force of resistance. He turned his head and pounced on Roland and others.

"Boom!" He fell heavily, and his heavy body crushed a row of houses. He walked towards Roland and his group angrily.

“Swoosh~”

"..." Several Badaniyan archers surrounded Roland and Kaslo and kept shooting arrows. Suddenly, several archers stopped at the same time. They touched their empty quivers and reluctantly put on their longbows, drawing out their long swords or their armor-piercing hammers.

"Swish!" Roland drew out the Dragon Slaying Sword and stood with a few others.

"Oh? Tiny humans? You have no bows and arrows, what are you going to do now?" Smaug's vertical pupils showed a mocking look.

"Are these your followers? I will burn them to charcoal in front of you!" Smaug said grimly.

Roland quietly waved his hand to send a signal to Bard who was hiding in the dark. Bard quietly launched the dwarf spear launcher, while Smaug, who was walking over, had no idea that there was a tiny human under him pointing a black arrow at him!

Suddenly Bard discovered the missing scale under Smaug's left wing. He was overjoyed and quickly aimed the black arrow at Smaug's left wing.

"For the glory of the Lord of Dale! For mankind! Die! Smaug!" Bard suddenly shouted.

"Let's go!" Roland hurriedly went into the alley with everyone else. The flames swept over the place where Roland and others had just stood.

"Swish!" The black arrow flashed with cold light and flew towards Smaug.

"Ah!" Smaug, who was originally breathing happily, suddenly fell silent.

"Ouch!" The intense pain in his heart made Smaug struggle violently. He struggled to fly into the sky, but before he could flap his wings a few times, he fell down heavily with a wailing sound...

"He fell down?" Bilber looked at Long Lake Town in the distance.

"I saw him fall with my own eyes!" Balin said excitedly.

"Smaug is dead!" Everyone cheered on the watchtower.

"Well done!" Roland emerged from the ruins and patted Bard with a smile.

"He's dead?" Bud couldn't believe it.

"You did it! You restored the glory of your family!" Roland praised.

"It's a pity that Changhu Town is destroyed..." Looking at the fire that came into view, Bud sighed.

"But at least the folks are all fine, aren't they? As long as people are still alive, everything will be fine!" Roland smiled and stepped onto a small boat.

"Want to go together?" Roland asked.

"Of course, wait for me!" Bud also jumped up.

"Oh! I almost forgot! I have to make use of Smaug's waste!" After letting everyone go first, Roland ran towards Smaug's body. You know, such a big flying dragon can produce a lot of precious materials.
